A TEACHER from Jersey College for Girls has retired after 33 years at the school.

Doctor Susan Taylor joined JCG fresh out of university and has spent her entire career teaching history and later Latin at the all-girls school.

Last Friday she was honoured for her service, which has included her working part-time over the last year, at a special party at the school which was attended by a number of past and present staff, governors and students.

Dr Taylor (58), who is originally from Hull, said she is now looking forward to having the freedom to enjoy her hobbies, particularly travelling, and hopes to go to France, Italy and Australia in the future.

She also hopes to be able to dedicate more of her time to the many groups she is involved in, like the Royal Commonwealth Society. ‘I have had the great good fortune to teach in a school where I have been able to enjoy teaching the students,’ she said.
‘I have had great friendship, support and company from my colleagues and the whole college community over the years.’

Friday’s celebration included drinks and nibbles on the school’s terrace followed by a buffet and music from a number of JCG’s sixth-form students.

Dr Taylor, who was head of the school’s history department for 17 years, said it had been particularly nice to see people turn out from across the school community, including a number from the school’s old girls’ association.

‘I came into teaching to teach the subjects I love,’ she said. ‘But it is a job where there is no end to it and there is always more that can be done. I won’t miss the report writing and the paperwork but the actual contact with the students and contact with colleagues I will miss.’
