St Brelade’s beach or Blackpool?
Friday 16th July 2010, 3:00PM BST.
JEP columnist Paula Thelwell considers the protest by St Brelade residents and traders over a new beach attraction.
‘In voicing such strong-felt concerns over the appearance of a bungee trampoline and a bouncy castle on the beach, the Friends of St Brelade’s Bay feared if such things were allowed the beach was in danger of turning into Blackpool.
‘I have long felt that if there was anywhere in Jersey that could be likened to Blackpool or an over-developed Mediterranean resort then it was St Brelade’s Bay. Fabulous beach and a stunning view as long as you are facing the sea. The ribbon development along the seafront and the dense residential proliferation inland has ruined what was once a true beauty spot.
‘In commenting on the Friends of St Brelade’s Bay’s reaction to Mr Sergeant’s venture, I do, nonetheless, sympathise over the noise nuisance it inflicted on those within hearing distance. The downside of so many leisure activities is that they exude noise, and the last thing anyone wants when relaxing on a beach is the throb of an engine – be that from a bouncy castle, a powerboat or a jet ski. The problem with St Brelade’s Bay and St Aubin’s Bay it that they both attract a concentration of high-octane water sports, which appeal to a certain market while deterring others.’
