THERE are signs of ‘cautious optimism’ of economic recovery, according to new figures released this week by the States Statistics Unit.

The latest business tendency survey covering the three months to the end of June showed an improvement in business activity across all sectors of the economy compared to the first quarter of 2010.

Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean said that the numbers for future employment prospects were encouraging. But although he said that there was room for cautious optimism, he warned there was ‘still a long way to go’.

Am I reading this right? The first quarter is being compared to the second quarter?

January, February and March (snow, sales and seasonal scrimping) is being compared to April, May and June (sun, sand and Summer clothes…not to forget the few tourists we have appearing).

Hmmmm – I’m not an economist but that does seem rather a childlike comment!

If business activity has increased over quarter 1 2010, surely a lot of this is due to seasonal factors? Apart from finance, most businesses are slack during Q1 of each year.

As well as seasonal any staff who receive a bonus usually get it end of March….spending it in April, May etc

Good to see Alan hasn’t lost his touch with the cliches – “room for cautious optimism”, “still a long way to go”…..maybe he should have thrown in one of these – “its a game of 2 halves”, “it’s not over til the fat lady sings”……

The number of empty retail outlets in town somehow doesn’t really give me a lot of confidence and have they finally rented out all the empty shops etc on the abbatoir site?

He must have ‘done the maths’ and ‘lessons have been learned’, ‘hardly rocket science’!

I suppose a Statement has to be made as they have released the new stats but i would think the general public is clever enough to realise it is seasonal.
