Saturday 17th July 2010, 2:58PM BST.
PLANS for a huge housing development in Westmount Quarry in St Helier have been given the go-ahead.
Dandara this week received approval to build 180 one and two bedroom flats, 16 sheltered apartments, a 60-bed nursing home, a 60-place pre-school nursery and an artist’s studio on the site.

No surprise there then, we must make sure that Dandara have continuity of work, for the umpteenth time, why are all these flats being built, there are flats built YEARS ago which have still not been sold, however, that makes no difference to Dandara, because if they are not sold the States take them off their hands, a win win situation, some thing very strange is going on in this island.
Will a whistle blower please step forward, or will somebody PLEASE,PLEASE be honest with us.

@Beanbag
Tell me were there are flats that haven’t sold for years since being built in this Island? Dandara’s latest block where the Rex Hotel used to be has all sold out before it was finished being built. We need more flats to try and bring keep the prices of house down and Dandara do a great job in building these.

Any car parking?

Looks like a development similar to the Spectrum flats. Will planning insist on a minimum square footage and adequate soundproofing for each flat this time?

look on the bright side at some point the States are going to run out of money be unable to tax us any more and have to tax the rich. Who will then depart to live cheaply off the backs of some other community there will be plenty of nice knew flats to live in if they don’t get burnt down in the riots that will come when the workers of this island wake up to the horrible reality of how they have been conned by our so called government.
In the meen time go on the piss if you can find a pub with cheap beer.

Just what the island needs – more flats!!!

Freddie Cohen has obviously overcome the ‘tricky’ position that he was put in with Dandara and the Five Oaks planning.
Why o Why do we need all these flats.. no consensus has been taken in years so we do not know how many people are on the island that need housing other than what the housing minister says.. Conspiracy theory? Freddy and Teddy in cahoots? Surely not!

Tom,
Spectrum flats for one, the Waterfront for another, I have a friend who lives in one of these rabbit hutches called flats in the Specrtum flats, the Social pay his rent, he is not the only one, they are far from being all sold, as Dandara could not find enough idiots to buy them.

why oh why do they insist on building 1 and 2 bedrooms flats. Even if you choose not to have children surely an extra room is preferable. if they built larger flats they may sell !!! or if they land up in housings hands the larger the better for families.

#9 Agreed Lou, even a childfree couple usually need two rooms (outwith the lounge), either for a guest room for friends and family that cannot afford to stay in Jersey hotels, or simply because two or more people in a confined space is a recipe for disaster. Mind you, 100,000 people in a confined space is a recipe for disaster but the States haven’t realised this yet
#2 Tom, the flats down at Castle Quay were on sale before I even came here (over two years ago now). Same % are apparently already sold as were already sold when I arrived, and I still get mail through trying to sell them to me. Strongly suggests they are not selling well at all.

I agree with Beanbag (comment 8)A quick search on the internet will reveal a large number of unsold flats of this type.As for Westmount Quarry- I would no sooner buy a dwelling which is built in to and possibly looking at a quarry face than I would buy one built on a marsh (still a few unsold there too!!!)

Instead of building more and more homes for every Tom Dick and Harry that decide to come and live here, how about a sensible immigration policy? Yeah I know it’s about 40 years too late and it’s the old typical xenophobic attitude of us inbred locals apparently, but whilst the floodgates are still wide open then we will just have to keep continually bulding more and more homes until we’re as bad as Singapore.
Not rocket science is it, Jersey is too small to accomodate the worlds population.

TOM,
You mention about the flats in St.Saviors Rd.being sold before they were built, maybe so, but why are there not nearly enough parking spaces for them, there is no parking in that area unless you pay, did Mr.cohen not say some time ago that all dwelling places wust have parking.
Some people do not drive, not many, and it is difficult to sell a place without parking.

I agree why more Flat?
If these flats are selling fast it because they were built on old hotel site which changes the housing category they fall in, and are being sold to people coming in or are all ready working in the finance as they are the only ones that can afford these flats as these people are the island high earners,

#12 Tobias, hopefully since there are so many non-locals now here it would be extremely difficult for anyone to refer to it as an inbred or xenophobic attitude, still, no doubt someone will try!
Personally I agree with you and I think the UK desperately need to do the same. A Government’s duty should be to those already living there while still looking out for the future of the island.

Well if Spain is anything to go by then Governments will approve newbuilds (in Spain roughly 1.1 million of the 3 million houses currently unsold are newbuilds) and development companies will continue to build them, even though they won’t sell!
Who’d have thought?

and the problem is??? Deman dis there, rental demand and purchase demand. Finance sector is regaining strength, as it is in London (a big feeder market for Jersey). Jobs increasing, lower unemployment…. I repeat… the problem is???
Ahhh.., that’s right… typical Jersey xenophobes, well, why dont’ we ship all the Jersey people aroudn the world back here if you can’t stand it… or is it the old green eyed monster again, locals wanting something for nothing, or thinking they are entitled to benefits others aren’t? Well, bad luck.

Same old faces ( I meam companies ).
It takes two minutes to pass these flats and over 10 years to plan a park , obviously the incentive must have a different worth !!!!!
And now the dairy has gone , who will be developing the old Five Oaks site ,, yep, you got it.

#17 The good old green-eyed monster comment, a vain attempt to shut up people who dare disagree with you
There is plenty of evidence out there for a lack of demand, where is your evidence for demand?
And what on earth has any of this got to do with xenophobia?

On Queens Road there is a pet shop and I know it sells rabbit hutches at a fraction of the price of these flats……..
