A lesson for Ministers: Be less trusting
Monday 19th July 2010, 3:00PM BST.
In today’s Jersey Evening Post, columnist Helier Clement gives his views on the revelations last week about the mismanagement and cost of the historical child abuse inquiry.
‘Over the very many years I’ve been casting a somewhat sceptical eye on some of the high-flying experts who, so the gullible politicians of the day have told us, bring such a wealth of attributes with them, I have (in the words of former JEP chief reporter Jimmy Job) seen them come and I’ve seen them go.
‘Moreover, quite a few of those who’ve gone have departed these shores so quickly – in terms of years of service – that they are all but forgotten now. It would serve no purpose to name them – indeed, some are long dead and doing so would cause distress to their families – but in the last 60 seconds a dozen names have sprung to mind.
‘Of course we expect to be given the expertise from these people for which we pay so handsomely but if there are lessons for ministers – all of them – to be learned from this then perhaps they should learn to be less trusting and more cynical; less susceptible to cart loads of bovine manure and more reliant on their own judgment.’
