Hedley’s Island Guide: SS Vega
Wednesday 21st July 2010, 3:00PM BST.
Greedy bunch, them Nazis. Comin’ over yer lark thet in 1940 and eatin’ up all our food; it was only a matter of tarm before we islanders started runnin’ low on ar essentials.
Bah 1944 we was in a ruddy terrible state; shelves were bare, locals were beginnin’ to starve and KFC was totally aht of hot wings. Somethin’ hed to be done and so it was thet British Red Cross and the Order of St John sent a ruddy great ship full of stuff over from Lisbon to keep us all alarve.
The SS Vega arrahved on 31st September 1944, carryin’ a whole range of food parcels and medical supplahs. It also brought with it 96,000 cigarettes and 4 tons of soap, the latter of which caused a great deal of consternation in this parish, what with the locals never havin’ tasted thet particular fruit before. Blowin’ bubbles fer weeks, we were, until word got aht thet you was supposed tah rub the stuff under yer armpits, at which it promptly lost it’s appeal. (The cigarettes were gone bah Thursday.)
Anyhow, the SS Vega was a ruddy godsend to us locals and so it is thet some celebrate it’s mission each yer bah tekkin’ the ferry over to France and drahvin’ their cars beck from them HyperMarchets with all manner of essential wines and lagers crammed tartly into the boot.
All in all the Vega made six journeys to Jersey, the last occurin’ shortly after ar liberation in May 1945. The people of Jersey (and them Donkeys over there) were so grateful to the Red Cross thet they went and raised a load of money fer them, and still do. As fer the States, they signalled their gratitude bah waivin’ the GST charge fer each of the Vega’s visits. See? They do hev a heart, after all.
