Student Alex Pointon (17) is a huge fan of the Territorial Army.

What’s your obsession? ‘The Territorial Army.’

What got you into it? ‘My mum and dad were both in the TA and my brother is in the regular army – I suppose that got me into it. And I thought it was a good thing to do.’

How often do you do it? ‘Once a week on Wednesday between 7.30 pm and 9.30 pm and weekends.’

Where do you do it? ‘At the TA Centre at Mount Bingham. There’s also a lot of training in the UK – I’m just back from basic training there. And there are opportunities for operational tours further afield.’

Is it easy to get into? ‘It’s easy enough. You have to pass a fitness test – it’s not ridiculously demanding, but it is moderately hard.’

What skills do you need? ‘Determination and the ability to work in a team. And a sense of humour – that’s probably the most important thing.’

Is it popular in Jersey? ‘I think so. There are a reasonable number of guys in it – and some girls.’ What do you like about it?

‘The community – everyone is really welcoming – and the opportunities you get that you can’t get anywhere else. And being part of the British Army.’

What do you need to do it? ‘Just yourself – and a good mindset.’

How do I get into it? ‘The TA meets every Wednesday between 7.30 pm and 9.30 pm and I just went up the one night and got all the stuff to join. If you want more information you can contact Sally on 755200.’
