Running the Island as a business?

In the week that Jersey Post has announced that 90 more jobs have to go, JEP columnist Alan Le Breton considers the pitfalls of running sociey like a business.
‘It’s no good senior company officials seeking to reduce their service level to argue that since others have got away with providing less, they can too – particularly when their unique selling point was, for example, door-to-door distribution.
‘What are we to believe? If you charge for a service, does that make it greater value for money? That I’m afraid smacks of what I call the ‘Jonathan Ross’ effect – namely, that you’re forced to pay inflated market rates for an individual or service to ensure you get the best talent, regardless of whether that talent is actually worth it.
