NINE of Jersey’s top hotels have joined forces to market the Island as a luxury destination.

The group of four- and five-star hotels launched a new brand and marketing campaign this week to tempt wealthy travellers who want to indulge themselves.

Luxury Jersey Hotels is made up of five-star hotels Grand Jersey and Longueville Manor and four-star hotels the Royal Yacht, The Club Hotel and Spa, Somerville Hotel, Hotel de France, L’Horizon Hotel and Spa, Greenhills Country Hotel and the Atlantic Hotel.

In the UK this would be called a cartel. What do the JCRA have to say?

You really are clutching at straws now. If you have money you go where the weather is, the great service and something that wows you.

All of the above is not Jersey – face it move on and keep building finance.

How on earth can these people possibly see when their heads are planted where they are, they MAY attract up market clientele who will spend their time in the hotel and not spend money in the town, the heydays are gone and nothing we do will make them return – sad but true !!!!!

Haven’t they realised that Jersey is already a “luxury” destination? The average traveller, especially famillies, do not visit Jersey because of the high prices, lack of attractions and often poor weather. This seems like yet another excuse to raise hotel prices even higher.

Remember when Sealink introduced their luxury Sunliner and Starliner service to Jeresy ? Very few takers and they made a huge loss.

As has been said, those with enough money will go to ‘the better’ destinations.

Once again the voices of negativity spout forth.

Face facts, its too expensive for the average tourist to visit the island with their family and run the risk of poor weather which reduces the list of attractions.

So these hotels, at the top of the market, rightly get together (for combined strategic marketing Mark G, not a price fixing cartel) and market a different segment of tourists; those that can afford to come, possibly for shorter breaks and spend more money in the island.

I suppose it all depends on how genuine this group is in wanting to promote the island rather than their hotels. If this campaign is carried out in the right spirit with many aspects of Jersey tourism given a fair airing then perhaps it could work.

However, attracting the wealthy isn’t going to work. Wealthy folk are the millionaires of this world who venture to more exotic places where the weather is guaranteed. This group would be far better off attracting those who are ‘comfortably off’ and don’t wish to travel far if they are from the UK, Ireland or certain parts of Europe. That will at least keep out the ‘party animals’ by keeping prices affordable rather than cheap.

I notice that around 50 per cent of the hotels and guest houses have had to close over the last five years or so. It would appear that The Jersey States prefer to support the financial institutions rather than tourism. No wonder the remaining hoteliers are worried and want to do something — finally.

Jersey could be made attractive to visitors again if more attention was given to tourism. I was shocked how much things have changed in comparison to a few years ago when I visited Jersey earlier this month.

It’s not for me to dictate how this should be done, but I’d be more than happy to support this campaign by way of my own networking if I knew that the island and its attractions were given priority.

Let’s face it, if a campaign such as the one I’ve suggested turns out for the better, then the hotels in question and others would automatically benefit.

Jersey doesn’t want to be another Ibiza, but there are ways and means to bring back the tourists who have no idea that a British beautiful island lies just off the northern French coast.

I’ve read the other comments and I don’t see any point in being negative about this. Where there’s a will, there’s a way as long as it is done in the best possible taste.

The future is bright the future is in quality. What better place than Jersey for nice short break and meal in northern Europe. Moola (7) is right to celebrate our success stories. Let us celebrate success. Mike (8) is a voice of reason.

The Royal Yacht why in heavens name would anyone in their right mind stay there!! I suppose it will for the Fri & sat night special entertainment shouting, swearing, fighting, chucking up, I feel sorry the few poor holiday makers that do come to Jersey, how intimidating the weightbridge is. No thank you, I go on a break to relax & enjoy myself The Royal Yacht would be my biggest nightmare.

I expect these top nine expensive hotels already have a big say in the marketing strategy of both Jersey tourism and the Jersey Hospitality Association. Probably lobbying heavily for their ‘exclusive Jersey’ so this is nothing new really.
But it’s a stab in the back for Jersey Tourism, if they have lost the support of these top hotels then its own future is looking very bleak.
Who will look out for the other 80+ poorer / smaller hotels? or are they not good enough for Super rich Jersey any more?

I notice the Savoy isn’t on the list – an example of a business that has gone from 3 star to 4 star – clearly they must be doing something right. No place for them? No Radisson either….
