Madeira appeal raises £11,500
Monday 26th July 2010, 2:58PM BST.
PEOPLE made homeless by February’s deadly floods in Madeira are to benefit from more than £11,500 donated by Islanders to an appeal by Jersey’s Portuguese consul.
Carlos Santos Costa set up the fund in the aftermath of the disaster in February which killed 42 people and left more than 600 homeless.
The final total of £11,761 has been sent to the Madeiran branch of the international catholic organisation Caritas, with the stipulation that part of the money be used in two of the worst-hit areas – Ribeira Brava and Serra de Agua.
