In the driving seat: Beverley Knight
Friday 30th July 2010, 3:00PM BST.
British soul and R&B singer Beverley Knight was in Jersey last weekend to perform at the Channel 103 Big Gig In The Park.
Since her debut album in 1995, the star has released six studio albums and her biggest hits include Greatest Day and Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda. As well as being a successful singer and songwriter she is also a producer with her own label, Hurricane Records
What do you think of Jersey’s roads?
I’ve been on a tour of the Island and oh my God, the whole Island is just so beautiful. It’s so pretty. It is really lovely to just cruise around and there are certain areas of Jersey when I really thought I could be in the Mediterranean.
When did you pass your driving test and how many times did you take it?
I passed on my third attempt, aged 20, while at university.
What was your first car?
A second-hand Citroën AX which I called Cindy. It was like a little hairdryer! Then there was Tina the MG TF and Tansy the Vauxhall Tigra.
What is your favourite car?
The Audi R8 V10 – I am going to have one one day! I also love the Aston Martin DB5.
What is your current car?
A big beefy Audi S5 V6 turbo called Geoff.
Where is your favourite place to drive?
The M6 – when nobody is on it.
Do you think you are a good driver?
I’m quality. I never do things like putting my make-up on at the traffic lights. I am brilliant at parking and can manoeuvre into tiny spaces. I fit more into the boy-racer clichés than those of women drivers. I suppose the only really girlie thing I do as a motorist is give my cars names.
What do you always carry with you on long journeys?
Music, music and more music.
Who would be your preferred passenger on a long journey?
My wonderful boyfriend James O’Keefe – only when he is sleepy, though.
What makes you angry when you are driving?
James, when he tries to tell me how to drive.
Have you ever been involved in a crash?
I’ve been lucky so far. I’ve witnessed loads, but I’ve never been involved in one.
Would do you like to listen to when you are driving?
Anything loud and not too slow.
Do you clean your car and how often?
Let’s just say my car gets cleaned very often – but not by me! I’m too damn lazy.
