Builders of unfinished float ‘surprised’ to take top prize

THE chairman of the St Clement Battle of Flowers team has said that the parish was ‘very surprised’ to win the top award at Thursday’s parade, because their exhibit wasn’t finished.

Bare wood was visible on parts of the Chinese-themed Shen Lung entry, despite the fact that the parish had already had their judging time put back so that they could have extra time to continue working on the exhibit down at the Battle arena.

Jean Chapman, the leader of the winning parish team, yesterday said that she could see why the decision had left other exhibitors feeling unhappy.

they should give it back simple as that they did not deserve it how can an unfinished float win top prize it make a mockery of the whole thing lets all put in half finished floats next year and see what happens !! ridiculous

Before you comment you should understand how the floats are judged, the points are split into four categories with 25 marks for flowering. The St Clements float would of lost marks in this category for the unfinished work, whilst the Optomists and all others would of received higher marks. St Clements won the top prize because it received more points overall than everyone else due to higher scoring in the other categories. Therefore making it a deserved winner.

It was obviously a better float than the rest even in an unfinished state. Wait till next year, St Clement is just going to enter the plans and win lol

Why do people get stressed out about st clements winning!? because you didnt?! obviously, sore losers. Yes an unfinished float isnt great but it was minimal, and as someone else commented, its judged in different catergories not just on completed or not. As St clement commented in the paper they did not expect to win because they hadnt finished, but well done st Clement, you took a risk with a super design, and it paid off.
I for the record, didnt go to the battle, and have nothing to do with the floats, just a JEP reader! This event is a traditional jersey event, for tourists and locals alike, so come on you sticklers, lets have some community spirit instead of sore losers! I have a tissue if you need one.
