VOICE-reactive technology is being used to improve the efficiency of the operation that gets food to Co-op supermarket shelves.

The Channel Islands Co-operative Society has invested £60,000 in the technology, which is considered cutting-edge in the sector. The system is in use at the society’s main warehouse in Bellozanne Valley.

Warehousing distribution manager Ron Morris said that the new system had helped to achieve a productivity improvement of 17 per cent, which equated to a saving of 40 man-hours.

Maybe the States would be better run by the CoOp?

I think online shopping would have been more useful! What century do we live in again? Also, what’s with the stamps still? What’s wrong with loyalty cards? It’s about time that the old people that run the Society give in to their old ways in my opinion!

#2 ‘…what’s with the stamps still? What’s wrong with loyalty cards?’

Just about everything. They are mainly about market research. No loyalty card has ever given me money which is mine to spend how and where I like.

The stamps are solely for the benefit of the customer as a Co-op shareholder.

Don’t get me started on ruddy Air Miles!

It’s a nice surprise now and again to see what is in your own divi account and not having to physically try hard to save for it

I maybe wrong but i think J (2) could have been saying that why are we still collecting stamps, when we could have a card which can be credited with the value? Not a loyalty card as such, but more of an easier method of collecting the value of the stamps?

My wife doesn’t normally let me do the shopping but as she was away for a couple of weeks I had the pleasure of shopping at the Co Op. What a pleasant experience it was, far better than the competition, well laid out, significantly cheaper and loads more offers.

Double divi a great idea too, stamps are ok but would prefer a double credit to my account. Managed to spend a months food allowance in 2 weeks, that should ensure I am banned from shopping forever, now to mess up the ironing too!

Where else are you greeted at the till with the phrase “Shennumba?”?

It must baffle a number of visitors on their first foray to the Co-op.

In the Uk the Co-Op give you a card- shaped like a credit card but it only records your points-which you hand over when shopping. You don’t have to remember a share number or fiddle around with stamps. You can then spend your “divi” whenever you like and the amount due to you can be clearly seen on your till receipt each time you shop. They also give bonus points, for example ten times the amount of points at the moment on homestore goods.I hardly ever use the Co-Op here as there are so many other supermarkets which are cheaper/better but it is a good system.

Ah, yes, eh, but you don’t end up with real money that’s yours to do what you like with.

Thats the beauty of the C.I. Co-op share account.

What you are describing sounds more like a loyalty card to me. I am happy to be corrected if it is in fact a share account.

In reponse to comment 9-I was just explaining what we have in the UK although for years I was quite happy with the Jersey system. However you do have to wait till April or May to get your money “out” in Jersey and of course always remember your number (difficult for older people sometimes!)Swings and roundabouts perhaps?

I love (and agree with!)comment 7!! As for comment 6-Mulvie I am pleased you enjoyed your trip to the Co-Op.When I went to the one at St Peter when last in Jersey I then had to go to another shop to get all the stuff that the Co-Op didn’t have!!You must have struck lucky!

Why dont they put the value of the stamps straight to your account at the till? You give your share number on double divi and bingo your account gets credited, no stamps or cards etc needed.

The Co Op are great though, way better than the competition.

That’s a very good point, Mr. Oxlong.

But it’s fun for the kiddies and the old folks, eh, sticking the stamps on to the cards and it gets them into the Co-op H.Q. once a year to get the book made up.

They might see something to buy or stop and have something in the cafe when they see how long the queue is at the bank counter.

Get a card like a boots card for double divi days instead of stamps and keep share numbers for normal days. That way we still get our big payout each year and we don’t have to sit at home licking stamps all day long!

A lot of people here forgot to mention what happens with you collection of completed stamp cards at christmas.

I just love it when you get to the check out and had over those cards, wow, doesn’t it feel good to see that shopping bill come down and more to the point, these stamps are worth more!

Why change a system that works well for so many years, brings a smile to many a face to so many, for the minority that want to change it. What ‘loyalty’ card does that.

As someone who is neither old nor a child i actually like the stamps. I save mine up for christmas and use them to pay for christmas dinner. Having lived in the uk i much prefer the option of being able to draw the money out of my divi account and having cold hard cash rather than points if you see what i mean.

Plus in an age where we have pin numbers to remember is it really that hard to remember a share number?

    Stamps and cards are cheap.

Building a 200,000 entry database, securing it properly, and ensuring it remains available at all times is not.

As a shareholder – I vote for no change.

I imagine the rationale behind the issuance of stamps on double divi day is to ensure they get spent in a Co-op store – if the double points were just credited to your share number then you could withdraw the cash and spend it anywhere rather than spending it in the co-op.

As a single parent its great to save up the stamps and use them for christmas the kids get all the treats they want and I have the satisfaction of knowing I saved for it something that just would not get done or feel the same if it was just points.

There is no obligation to spend them in store. They can be credited to a share account.

As I avoid being in Jersey in winter like the plague I was not even aware of the Christmas stamp redemptions mentioned by posters above.

Being a cynic, I wonder if the Co-op hope that a number of the stamps will fester in a drawer somewhere and never get redeemed. Just like the Jersey currency that tourists used to take home as keepsakes, to the considerable advantage of the States Treasury.

On a different slant, if they have saved 40 man hours perhaps they should look at recruiting staff for their early morning checkout shift then we wouldn’t have to wait so long – shopping time 10/12 minutes – checkout time UNACCEPTABLE !!!
