Reform is back on the States agenda
Saturday 21st August 2010, 2:58PM BST.
THE States reform debate has made another unlikely comeback with the news that plans to remove four Senators, shift elections to the spring and set a universal four-year term have been lodged for debate in October.
Proposals lodged by the Privileges and Procedures Committee would see candidates elected in next year’s ‘general election’ given an extra six months on their term, to move future elections into the spring.
They would also drop two Senatorial seats from the 2011 elections and the 2015 elections, to bring the number of States Members down from 53 to 49.
The proposals are due to be debated by the House in October.

these reforms do not go far enough we need island wide vote foget the deputys and the constables just have twenty states members then you can decide what they need to be called. at present we have members who are elected to our goverment with less than three hundred votes how can that be right.island wide elections on the same day are a must not just for democracy but to enable us to get a better quality of member in our goverment

Reform does not go far enough. How about keep 4 get rid of the rest or they all accept the position on a honorary basis like it used to be, that will save the taxpayers some of there hard earned money.

and the point of clothier was ? what????
the turn out to vote is rotten, mind you, as nothing much happens with a change in the states.
many must feel that to vote is a waste of time as it is the same old same old. let us have the no vote, as well, for use when none of the above will do.
lets extend the voting time to threedays or a week if need be.
as for getting in with 400 or so votes, thats cheap if you buy them all a pint, buying two pints for them was under five grand, win win all the way.
honestly get back to the ballot box people, or continue to be ridden over rough shod.

Reform debate errr mark 10…….dont get excited about it, just as turkeys wont vote for Christmas, our politicians wont vote for reform.

Cutting four Senators will increase the influence of the country Constables and Deputies who are the most reactionary members and already bias the house heavily in favour of the nine country parishes as opposed to the urban parishes.
The reform will not go through but only in Jersey could a proposed reform make the system less democratic than it already is!

Attention all workers..the rich and establishment types …all want you to swallow the “What’s the use ” there wont be any improvement idea…it totally suits their controlling agenda, if even half the island came out to vote they would be bricking it…think on.
