Public support for postal union

Monday 23rd August 2010, 2:58PM BST.

THE battle to save the Island’s postal service continued at the weekend when the Island’s communication union went back to town to petition Islanders.

Members collected 1,500 signatures, more than double the number they had collected the week before on their first attempt to garner public support.

Their petition urges the States to intervene on behalf of Islanders to maintain the level of postal services in the Island. The petition also urges Jersey Post not to cut deliveries back to a three-day week.

I have 3 times had someone push this petition in my face and 3 times I have said no to signing it once to a bit of abuse as why wouldn’t I sign it!

I as one of the 90,500 on this island who have not signed it hope the states will listen to us in the fact we don’t want to have to subsidise a post service that is no longer need due to email etc we need to cut back not subsides

We do not want the States to subsidise Jersey Post, the fact is when they shove their clip-boards in front of people in town they only explain that they want support to stop competition being let into the island, they at NO POINT mention to the public that they are asking the States for our hard earned tax pounds in order to keep them afloat.

Plus I DO want three day a week deleiveries, I am not a company and frankly I don’t care if I don’t recieve post every day, who sends letters now anyway! Oh look, your sitting at a computer reading this!

Until this petition is done in a fair and regulated way it means absolutely nothing, so you guys carry on wasting your and everyone elses time that you stop, your only telling those who sign the petition half the story, therefore it will be just another useless statistic.

Every person you approach must be told the same script which needs to be agreed between Jersey Post, the Union and the States so every person knows what they are signing up to.

Actually, have those who have not been told the full story been signing a fraudulent document? I will be surprised if the Union will be able to use this petition at all!

Is any senior Jersey Post management willing to defend their actions on this forum?

The tax payer is not there to cover losses from competition in teh Postal Service because thats what they are demanding. These unions think we are all paying into some kind of charity fund just for them and its ludicrous.

I think we need to cut back further on post, why are the states departments still sending letters ie income tax, hospital appointments etc. They should ask for an e mail address and if ok with recepient communicate by e mail in future.

I wonder how many of those who signed felt intimidated. I don’t care if I get my post monthly, they are mostly bills anyway.

This is the same company that promotes people spending their money out of the island via Ship2Me and the Argos link.

If it takes one or two more days to get my bills or junk mail, as that is the only post I regularly get, then so be it.

I also refused to sign their petition on Saturday.

Half the people who signed this petition probably did it for a quiet life, if the aggressive manner in which the clipboard was shoved under my face is anything to go by. I don’t respond to bully boy tactics…

    Well said 1,2 & 3.

What a small amount of signatures for such a large population, and out of those who signed, how many knew they were signing to give the PO subsidies?

I have already made my stance and refuse to sign!

No. 6 It was also aggressively pushed in my face to sign. I signed it Victor Hugo – small victory I know. But couldn’t be bothered with the possible aggro of not signing. as you say signed for easy life.

Time then for competition for the JEC, Jersey Water and Gas then too. JT are holding up Ok if the amount of people in theri shop daily compared to the foreigners if anything to go by, and no doubt given a choice people will choose local when possible, but they should have a choice.

One thing I would say to those who dig at the incumbent Utilities, is that they were / are gold plated, because that is what Islanders (like me) with no knowledge of the “real world” expect them to be. People want UK prices, you will get UK standards, you can’t have gold plated on the cheap!
