Prison is no place for this man
Thursday 26th August 2010, 3:00PM BST.
From Helen Sole.
I WAS horrified, saddened and angry to read on the front page (JEP, 20 July), of the Islander who suffers from schizophrenia being sent to jail as there was no suitable sheltered accommodation or relevant treatment options available in the community.
This man had committed arson, which of course is a serious offence.
Clearly the Bailiff Michael Birt would have preferred to have not had to send him to La Moye.
We all know sending people to prison and keeping them there is a very costly business – but this is hardly the point.
What will happen to this man in prison? He will be in a place totally unsuitable for his needs, and I would imagine his medical condition is likely to deteriorate as a result. We all know many people come out of prison with more criminal tendencies than they enter with.
Something must be done for this man, and for others who may follow this sad path.
Is this the way to treat an already very vulnerable member of society?
