Town businesses devastated by floods
Friday 27th August 2010, 3:00PM BST.
SHOP owners, publicans and restaurateurs were counting the cost of yesterday’s flash floods, which has left many town businesses devastated just before the lucrative bank holiday weekend.
Almost all of August’s usual rainfall – 45 mm – fell in just three hours, leaving Islanders wading through sections of town and retailers desperately trying to board up their doors.
Manhole covers were blown open by the pressure of the water and traffic slowed to a standstill as drivers inched their way through water that was knee-deep in places.
Bath Street, Beresford Street and Halkett Place were the worst affected areas, as the torrential rain battered Jersey between noon and 3 pm.
