Rare prison camp pictures to go under the hammer
Thursday 2nd September 2010, 2:58PM BST.
A RARE set of photographs from 1915 showing the construction of Jersey’s Blanches Banques prisoner of war camp will be auctioned next week.
There are nine pictures of the camp, depicting well-digging, pipe-laying and sheds under construction at the St Brelade sand dunes during the First World War, and they will go under the hammer at Glencoe on Wednesday.
Included in the lot are five photographs of the old St Peter’s Hospital from 1916 and three shots of Government House in 1919. All were taken by Albert Smith and each picture has a handwritten date and information notes on the back.
Auctioneer Simon Drieu is expecting the collection, which belongs to an anonymous private seller, to fetch several hundred pounds.
