Horses found stabbed

Tuesday 7th September 2010, 2:59PM BST.

TWO horses were stabbed in an horrific attack at the weekend.

Both animals were left with deep wounds after the attack in St Lawrence between 3 pm on Saturday and 8 pm on Sunday, when the injuries were discovered by the owner.

One of the young horses had a stab wound to the chest and the other was slashed. The owner, who wants to remain anonymous, said that he could not believe how someone could inflict such wounds.

As a horse owner and also someone who has rescued many badly treated animals over time this incident beggers belief. I cannot ever imagine how someone would want to do this to an innocent animal. Do these sick individuals not realise that horses as with all other animals have feelings? Someone who picks on animals in this way is obviously a bully but also a wimp at the same time. They prey on animals in this way as they will not retaliate. I would imagine they would be far to scared to do it to a human who could retaliate.

I hope that whoever did this is bought to justice and I beg anyone who knows who did this to come forward to the police. Highly likely that the owner knows who has done this, even if he/she doesn’t realise it.

This type of crime is not the sort of random act one might think, otherwise there would be more instances. Moreover it is a plotted revenge attack with a definite motive.

Land dispute, noise complaint, unpaid bills for horse feed, claim over ownership of the horses or dispute over another asset or instance (e.g. car damage by same horses).

Cross reference that with the one from 5 years ago and the answer may be easier.

And, No 14 Horse Lover, before any derision is heaped on the Police, their track record is not currently known to a lot of people. However, even if a suspect is known, it is still a long step to put them at the scene and committing the act.

Some time ago there was a spate of horse stabbing attacks in the UK. The offenders were never caught. However, I investigated similar attacks on lifestock, in particular horses in Wales some years ago. I came to the conclusion that the attacks were random and the persons responsible were living within 3-4 miles of the attacks, there was an of licence or pub within the close viscinity, the person would committ the act alone whilst under the inluence of drink or drugs and would be a young person lacking communication skills and of low education. He would be a loner and others of his age would taunt him and bully him. The attacks would be sexually motivated and the animals would be sexually abused. I was proved to be right in this instance.

Like all the people who have posted comments here, I feel totally disgusted by this. But it made me stop and think that every time someone puts a knife into a peice of meat on their plate, someone before them put a knife or a bullet into a beautiful, sensitive living animal, for our pleasure. I once visited an abbatoir and heard the cries, and saw the looks of fear in the eyes of the helpless creatures. I no longer eat meat. I hope I don’t sound judgemental but hope that this event may encourage more people to be sincere animal lovers, for the sake of our four-legged friends that can give us so much pleasure in ways other than killing and eating them.

I, like you, am an animal lover and vegetarian. I stopped eating meat many years ago after seeing footage of horses being butchered for human consumption in Italy. Unfortunately, the awful truth is that in 21st century Britain thousands of horses are butchered for human consumption every year (mainly for the French market). It is an easy way for the British racing industry to dispose of unwanted animals which have failed to make the grade. They are slaughtered in much the same way as beef cattle. First, a bullet into the brain, then…

I appreciate Big Bean’s and PJG’s views. I hesitated to add my comment in case it might be considered off track, but trusted the moderators to decide whether to post it or not. Where I think that the point I raised is relevant to the topic is that the perpetrator/s of this cruel act clearly showed insensitivity to the feelings of the horses, treating them as if they were no more than a piece of meat. When we see meat in the supermarket, it is easy to forget that this once was a living, feeling, intelligent creature. Whether we choose to be vegetarian or not, we can at least be aware of what often happens to animals at the mercy of humans, and encourage others, especially young people, to be more sensitive, so that cruel acts that we have just heard about would be less likely to happen in the future.

On a more lighthearted note, please note that not all vegetarians are members of an ‘anti meat eating brigade’, nor do they necessarily eat more curd than others, and they are certainly not only women!
At the risk of going off-track: regarding PJG’s point about our teeth – according to biology, they are not designed for eating animals, which have to be killed for us, cooked and cut before our teeth can do the rest – unlike a carnivore’s teeth which are designed perfectly for the whole job.

For more than 20 years I have competed in many disciplines of man + dog competitions (not poncy crufts type dogs shows I add).
To obtain the levels I have achieved one must work very closely and form a bond of trust akin to that you describe between yourself and your horses.
I have eaten dog as well (not one of my buddies I hasten to add, even a calouse old got like me has limits), bit tough, similar to an old goat. So long as the animal does not suffer and is killed humanely it’s OK with me, after all when its dead it only a carcase. I would get a bit concerned with cannibalism but that’s a different subject

    30 Animal lover,
I am interested in where you have learnt so much about dental anatomy?
Humans have Molars at the back, used by herbivores to crush cellulose material found in plants. These have flat tops and you can easily tell which ones they are with your tongue. Incisors are those eight teeth at the front and are a bit like garden spades. They are adapted in omnivores for shearing sharply and biting off meat. In-between are the Canine (Fangs). They evolved to hold food in order to tear apart. Not very useful in eating plant matter, but perfect for animal matter.
With teeth specialised in breaking down both animal and vegetable matter, its clear that humans are omnivores, built to eat both animals and plants, using either the front or the back to help digest food. Choice to eat one or another is a personal one, not an evolutionary one.

Humans were designed/evolved (depending on what you believe) to eat animals, not cooked animals, as nature so rarely provided them until we learnt to tame fire.

But to harm one for no reason is just pathetic.

Choosing not to eat meat – when I was thirty something by the way – was more from my own intuition than because of scientific opinion or following others’ beliefs. It just felt right for me at the time, and I’ve never looked back since …

I just read a JEP news item regarding thoughtless harm to yet another of our Island’s horses – and its unfortunate rider. It must be tiny minority that would deliberately commit such acts, but twice in one week seems way way too much for the caring community that Jersey is known for worldwide.

I would guess that our distant ancestors ate mainly a vegetarian diet but would supplement this with eggs, small game, fish, etc, as and when they could obtain them.
We can be vegetarian but we have a definite fondness for animal protein, most feasts involve the consumption of meat.
As for cooking, my cat prefers cooked meat to fresh. Raw chicken is interesting but roast it, pull apart and allow to cool to cat consumption temperature and it is a lot more tasty in cat terms and gravy helps it go down!
If my cat had a credit card, could operate the cooker and make gravy I would be redundant! :-)

I am pleased the common theme among all of us posting here (Veggies to vampires) is
WHOEVER IS DOING THIS IS TWISTED.
Let’s all be vigilant, especially at night. If you are making a car journey and can, make small detours past where you know horses are outside unattended.
If you see suspicious goings on use your mobiles to ring the police, 612612 if it’s just suspicions, 999 if you are certain attacks are happening.

If possible note any registration numbers of cars they are using, note a description of the suspects, numbers, Male/female, tall, short, fat, thin, do they have a hat or not, hair length and colour, skin coulour, style and colour of jacket, jumper shirt etc, style colour of trousers, jeans, shorts, colour of shoes.
Anything that is unusual and easy spotted from a distance is especially helpful to the police, stripes on clothing, large logos on tops,
A memory trick is to start at the top and methodically concentrate on each section till you get to the feet.

Remember they are sickos and are using weapons on these horses so ARE ARMED, DO NOT APROACH THEM, KEEP YOUR DISTANCE. Do not follow them on foot, lock your car doors and stay inside, note the direction they leave. Let the police do the chasing and apprehending.
I am sure together we can help the police stop these senseless acts on defenceless animals.

Obviously, you don’t have much contact with horses or if you do, you don’t know much about training them. Horses happen to be very affectionate animals and if intelligence is measured by speed of learning then horses can be considered very bright.

They have a extraordinary sense of observation and an exceptional memory. What horses do not have however is ‘problem-solving intelligence’, but then again neither do all humans!

By the way, the racing industry over-breeds horses in its search for winners. The horses that don’t make the grade go to horse abattoirs…and I think you know the rest. However, I will say one thing, if these horses are destined for the food chain, it’s better they are slaughtered in Britain and exported on the hook rather than the hoof.

How could we not agree on that.

    Hi there

How do they know for sure that it wasn’t the cow’s horns, or the horses fighting, or a run-in with a fence post?

It is possible that the nutters who had been inflicting the same type of wounds on fenced-in Horses in the Southampton Areas last year, have maybe fled to Jersey C.I.?

If you catch the mindless b…….s, for heavens sake use the Cat-o’-nine tails on them. Nothing less than 10 lashes each – then salt the wounds!!

Bring back Corporal Punishment – not ASBO ‘Medals’!!

“Recent studies even suggest horses are able to count if the quantity involved is less than four.” Now that is intelligent….and there i was impressed by the gorillas and chimps that could use sign language and boards that talked when they pressed certain buttons
