THEIR flying days may be long gone, but three Islanders who took to the skies in the legendary Lancasters during the Second World War wasted no time in reliving their bombing missions yesterday.
At a special gathering, pilot Ken Trent, mid-upper gunner Peter Crow and rear gunner Peter Turley climbed back into the fighting positions they occupied during the conflict.
And they enjoyed posing for photographs for the media and onlookers at the static display at the Airport.
Despite being blind and physically disabled, Mr Turley was helped back into the rear gunner position for the first time since the war.

Lest we ever forget what these incredible men and women did for Britain.
We were so close to losing the skies to the Germans, which woud have had an horrendous outcome on the war.
The Germans did screw up with their tactics, but that should not overshadow the enormity of the battle. It will be remembered in a thousand years time, if civilization as we know it still exists.

Might help if I read the article properly. I was of course referring to the Battle of Britain and not the bombing raids.

Excellent point bruce, I’d love to know what the people who suffered in this and other terrible conflicts in the name of freedom feel about the increasing level of dross the media and entertainment business spew, not to mention the proliferation of half witted ill-informed comments on forums such as this.
