THOUSANDS were today expected to witness the amazing sight of a man flying high above Jersey as Jet Man Yves Rossy rockets in for the International Air Display.

Like a scene from Superman, the daredevil was due to swoop, roll and climb high above St Aubin’s Bay before parachuting down onto the beach at West Park.

It is the first time that Mr Rossy has performed at a public air show anywhere in the world.

The 51-year-old, who shot to fame in 2008 when he crossed the English Channel with a self-designed jetpack strapped to his back, was yesterday putting the finishing touches to his eagerly awaited performance.

Maybe I’m reading this wrong, but it seems to me this article is implying that he was supposed to do is performance but didn’t.

    “..were today expected to witness..”
“..the daredevil was due to swoop..”

If this is the case and he did not do his performance, maybe you could finish writing the article and tell us why?
While we are on the subject of “Jet-man” I have to say, I was severly disappointed at his “flight” across the channel. Reading the pre-event build ups I was expecting him to leap from the cliffs, ignite his jet pack and wizz off into the distance. Instead he was dropped from something like 4,000ft and it was more of a jet propelled glide across the channel.
Was anyone else thinking this was cheating a little bit? Im sure if you slapped some huge wings on a cow and dropped it out of an air ballon at 4,000ft with rockets strapped to its udders it could “fly” the channel just as well as Jet-man!

OK Jersey Boy, why don’t you try it if you think it’s that easy. I was one of the many thousands who were amazed this afternoon.

Oh Jersey Boy, you really have no idea what it takes do you ? A; It was by no means certain he was going to Fly because of the wind conditions, so it was perfectly proper for the JEP to phrase their report in such a way …
And B ; Having jumped from a plane many times under a Ram Air Parachute, i can fully understand how you need the initial speed from a plane in order to glide. He has only a very small wing with no ailerons for lift. Do a little bit of research before you comment !

He was flying so high up in the clouds that his display was fairly pointless.

I was wondering if there was anyone stupid enough to utter one negative word about the amazing display put on yesterday…… for FREE !

I personally think Mr Rossy is a total hero and the entire display was an absolute treat and personally give my thanks to everyone single person involved. Even the traffic cleared relatively quickly !

Im not suggesting that he’s not brave and that its not impressive. Im just saying that Gliding with a bit of propulsion is a lot different to flying!

I don’t find his performance anymore impressing then the falcons – I just don’t see what all the fuss is about.

I am correct to comment on the way the article was written because the fact it was all in past tense and using terms to suggest he didn’t do it, but with out actually referring to the reason why.

As you have stated in your opening lines of your comment “It was by no means certain he was going to Fly because of the wind conditions” That’s the really key part of the story they have failed to tell us, which then puts the entire article into context. Without it the article is confusing.

So Tony how about you read my comment properly before arguing it?

Jerseyboy, as soon as you’ve finished your latest invention, let us all know and we’ll come and make ridiculous comments.

Unfortunately I was unable to see him, but imagine the commercial applications !

A couple of weeks ago, we were flying back from Spain, via Heathrow / Gatwick etc. However, our flight from Spain flew straight over Jersey, and if BA had this equipment on board, it would have been a quicker way home for us, and saved us the agony of getting stuck in traffic on the M25 !
