PLANS to merge Customs and Immigration with the States police have been proposed to save money as part of the biggest ever States spending review.

The idea is included in an internal Home Affairs review into the overlapping functions of the two departments.

It was carried out by Home Affairs staff and then reviewed by independent business experts from Jersey, who do not work for the States.

But the plan is fiercely opposed by Home Affairs Minister Ian Le Marquand, who called it completely unworkable and dismissed it as ‘complete and utter nonsense’.

Yes, and we know why it’s unworkable – because of the animosity that was caused by the police towards Customs recently.

“Completely unworkable,” what sort of comment is this from a Minister who knows little of the fineries of the work these 2 enforcement agencies engage in. No wonder the review by Home Affairs and the independent business expert team raise the idea of a merger. The amount of duplication of effort and human resource hours that I understand goes on, must surely be in the forefront for change? Imagine the potential savings implications. No surprises though, this bastion of traditionalism our misguided Home Affairs Minister is, just doesn’t equate with workforce modernisation or indeed modernisation at all…get real Mr Le Marquand!….and PJ….well you just haven’t a clue!
