JERSEY’S underlying rate of inflation has dropped to its lowest figure in ten years, even though prices of essential items including food and fuel rose slightly in the past three months.

Quarterly figures released today by the Statistics Unit showed that the Retail Price Index dropped from 2.8 per cent in June to 2.1 per cent in September, a fall of 0.7 per cent. From June 2009 to June 2010, the increase was 2.8 per cent.

Since when does 10% constitutue a ‘slight’ increase??? The price of bread alone has risen 10% recently, parking is going up and over the last two years wages have remained the same or in some cases decreased, with a warning from your employer that you are lucky to still have a job – these figures just dont add up to me. Dont even get me started on GST or tax increases!

This is excellent news and even with the forthcoming increase in GST, inflation is likely to be lower than the levels we have used to over the last ten years.

Who are they trying to kid?
They must think we are sooo stupid to believe this spin——–everything up up and up,food, gas, water petrol easier to say what has gone down? nothing comes to mind.
Oh yes wages has gone down and pensions in real terms.
I guess they can tell us any old spin they like and expect us to believe it,any-thing to keep us quiet to prevent unrest and prevent us revolting.

this department talks a load of rubbish.
as someone pointed out on these pages , not solong ago , it is the way they calculate it, which is done a different way to the rest of the world.
maybe they have the time to remind us again.
we were having a laugh about the price of a loaf, and had said , that as the interest rates at the banks are so low, instead of giving any interest at all , we could go in and collect a couple of slices .
my bank sent me a tea bag a while ago, i am sure others got them as well.

Everything is going up. Every week the shopping bill rises a few pennies here, 50p there and they say prices are coming down!

How will an extra 2% GST bring these prices down? Get real people aren’t stupid.

The Statistics dept. is the biggest waste of Tax payers money. It is a tool,a magic wand for the ‘Status Quo’(Our millionaires club-The States of Jersey)to manipulate numbers and create whatever they want the result to be.

    @ Dingdong

It’s a small, independent department which regularly ends up arguing with the others about the use of its statistics for political spin. Politicians will use statistics as they wish and ignore the ones that don’t meet their agenda. You should see how many of the reports they publish that never even make coverage by the JEP because they are not shocking enough to rope in the ignorant masses.

Try reading some of them on gov.je/statistics and you might learn something.
