NEW supermarket chain Waitrose will create 200 new jobs – double the number of workers they expected to take on.

Waitrose, the food shops of the John Lewis partnership, is taking over two Checkers supermarkets and a Safeway store owned by Sandpiper early next year.

They say the reason behind the increase is the creation of a number of roles for meat, fish and cheese specialists on their fresh-food counters, as well as wine specialists.

200 new jobs, excellent! Perhaps they could be required to first only consider applications from people currently in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance/Income Support. Social Security could assist by ensuring that all suitable claimants are issued with job application forms and then monitor their progress.

How many of these jobs will go to cheap imported labour?

I am not being racist (for those of you who do not know the meaning of the word) but I am being a realist!

Good idea no 2. but I doubt if many people on Jobseekers/income support would want to work in a supermarket.

Depends how many locals would deem the position beneath them and make an application. As for “cheap imported labour” the job will pay the going rate to everyone, immigrants will not be paid a lesser rate so not sure I understand your point. BTW being a racist is exactly what you are doing, suggest you familiarise yourself with the meaning of the word.

Nice one comment number 2: Spot on, but I agree with number 4: most of those on these allowances are on them for the very reason they dont’ want to work.

Such allowances should be halted when jobs are unable to be filled.

Parktown Prawn: I agfree you are certianly not being racist, nor would it be racist by even saying you dont’ want foreigners to take local jobs. However, quite often these jobs go to foreigners because locals onto the jobseekers allowance won’t work there. Perhaps enforcing those on jobseekers who are suitable to take these jobs first, and if they refuse, cancel the allowance. That lot need to learn they don’t get somehting for nothing.

Alternatively, we copy the lead of many other countries and bring in a “work for the dole” scheme.

We have a Waitrose near us and we use it frequently and one of the reasons why it is such a nice place to shop is because the staff as so pleasant.Nothing is ever too much trouble and they will go out of their way to find you something or assist in some way.I hope the Jersey venture will find the same calibre of staff but above all else I hope they only employ people who speak fluent English (whatever nationality they are!)and have good people skills and a smile on their faces!
