No smoke without ire

Wednesday 27th October 2010, 3:00PM BST.

From Sonia Ahier-Kerr.
HAS something gone wrong with my calendar, I ask myself? Has 1 April come round again already?

Ban smoking in cars: just how would they propose to enforce that, when they cannot even stop drivers using mobile phones, or smokers littering the streets with cigarette ends, or people throwing food, etc, on pavements?

Ban smoking in public spaces: another tricky job, if ever there was one, defining a public space.

In my book, that would mean anywhere that was not a private space, eg, Gorey Common, Les Platons car park, Westmount, the Five Mile Road, all the beaches and too many other places to count.

The number of unemployed people would soon drop to zero if they were given jobs as enforcers of that law.

I am in favour of reducing smoking, especially in the young, but at the same time I am seriously concerned about the mental health of those we trust to work for the good of our beloved Island and who come up with such stupid and impracticable ideas.

    Sonia,

Are you suggesting that if a law cannot be enforced then it should be abolished?

Laws can change attitudes towards what kind of behaviour is acceptable and of course it takes time but generaly the majority do comply.

Smoking bans in many forms are in force around the world so it’s not Jersey politicians thinking up new laws just copying and modifying existing laws.

Funny, I didnt see one mention of banning smoking in private cars so maybe they are thinking up new laws!

re: Private vehicles, here you are:

I’m unable to find the full details of the Jersey Tobacco Control Strategy so cannot comment on whether the laws here would wish to ban smoking in vehicles regardless of whether there were minors in the car.

On a related note, let’s see if California votes YES on Proposition 19 next week and then Jersey can follow their lead ;-) !
