The development of sport could now be linked to a proposed foundation

FUNDING for sports development officers and the hosting of sporting events are to be almost halved as part of the Education, Sport, and Culture budget cuts.

Following the Comprehensive Spending Review, £160,000 is to be cut from the original £340,000 grant, which means that funding for free sports activities and travel grants for competitors will also be affected.

However, the department has plans to plug that financial gap through the establishment of a sports foundation.

Continuing to fund £180,000 towards those areas by placing the money into the foundation, it is then hoped that business sponsors or private donors will contribute to the pot in a move which could actually result in more money being available for Island sport.

As the article is written, GBP160000 is being cut from ESC funding to sports but they will contribute GBP180000 to a foundation….how is this deemed to be a saving??
Also, will the foundation be part of ESC and if so,how many extra staff will be required to run it and at what cost? Should this be the case, then where is any saving being made??
Perhaps ESC could explain how this is a cut or has the JEP omitted crucial information from the article?

Currently ESC pony up £340,000 to fund sport, this will be cut by £160,000 leaving £180,000 vailable. This money will be paid into a foundation in the hope that others will make up the difference.
So another layer of administration, probably less front line staff and facilities unless the donors emerge and will they with everyone counting their cash?
Another winner from James Reed and his merry band! :-(

I’m glad that the original article has been expanded to include all relevant information..shame this wasn’t checked before publication!
The spin offs from successful sport in promoting the Island (ICC awarding tournaments to us,for example)are obvious and have brought many visitors who have spent money far in excess of the cut being proposed..isn’t this relevant? Removing one or two highly paid staff from the department would easily achieve the required savings.
