No need to increase GST, claims Deputy

THE increase in GST could be scrapped if alternative Budget plans are approved next month.
Removing the high-earners cap on Social Security and gradually increasing contributions could remove the need for the 2% GST increase and other new taxes, according to Deputy Geoff Southern.
He says that by abolishing the £65m annual ‘top-up’ for Social Security, the States could cancel the final parts of the cuts to Income Tax allowances under ‘20% means 20%’ and tax rises planned in the Budget.
