Double blow for travellers

The cost of air travel is to rise

TRAVELLERS have been dealt a double blow following news that the price of air travel from the UK and in and out of Jersey is to rise.

While a UK tax on passengers leaving British airports will go up by as much as 55 per cent from Monday, leaked plans to the JEP have revealed that Jersey Airport will put up charges imposed on every passenger flying in and out of the Island.

The increase in the UK’s air passenger duty, which applies to anyone taking a flight from the UK, will take effect from Monday. The hike in the charges will mean that a family of four flying economy to Australia will pay £340 in taxes – an extra £120.

Here we go again, put up the jersey airport tax and we lose yet more tourists. Is there someone at Cyril Le Marquand house with no brains (on £150k )? Oh i forgot, we, joe public have to find ways to pay for the £20k of expenses incurred by Mr. Green the airport director. Come on Jersey, GET A GRIP….

another nail in the coffin for tourism, even the banks will have to shell out for this.
the uk part of the tax is unavoidable, but why our goverment has to follow like a lost sheep is beyond me.
our airport fees are over the top already..

The timing is perfect, GST is going up, pay rises are frozen, unemployment is at a record high and now we can’t escape as the cost of leaving is too high.

Flying will once again become a luxury that only the rich will be able to afford just like the olden days of flying. Guess its all down to carbon emissions etc and oil costs. Wait and see the collapse of many airlines in the near future especially low cost airlines. Flying will then become a glamourous form of travel once more.

Well we had it too good for too long i guess with cheap travel but of course this was never the case on local routes to the UK which have always been high and now only to make it worse. Back to the ferries again i think and the demise of Jersey Airport.

This has to be a blow for Jersey Tourism. I spent some great years working in Jersey and have returned a few times on holiday to catch up with my many friends who live on the island. I was planning to return for a holiday in the new year to show my fiance around what is a beautiful island. Alas these impending price hikes are the final straw for me. I can now holiday for a week in Lanzarote (including flights)for the price of a return flight From Northern Ireland to Jersey. This coupled with the demise of the island hotel industry has left me little or no choice but to look at alternative holiday arrangements.

Frankly I wish airlines would just give you a price for the flight rather than adding on charges, taxes, baggage,”administration” etc etc as it is just infuriating to find a flight advertised at £20 ends up at £120!!One of the joys of living now in the UK is being able to go on holiday or take a mini-break without having to fly which is so refreshing after years of being held to ransom on the rock!!

what is Jersey doing, shooting itself in the foot once again. You have sold yourselves out in everyway. It was once the island to be envied the world over.First the farmers sold to the greedy developers, then tourism went, now the airport after spending millions on updating it, have now made it impossible for ordinary people to come for a holiday.Jersey please get a grip.

I left Jersey in 2008 after living there my whole life (42 years) – we bought a cottage in the New Forest

I’m surprised at just how more enjoyable our lives are in England. There’s so many beautiful and interesting places to visit, without having to find an airport

I genuinely feel sad to see what’s happening to my beloved Jersey, but will certainly never return permanently

someones got to pay the money (was it £500 ) the air traffic controllers got for coming in on there day off so the private taxi’s pay now to pick up there punters and the coach companies pay to pick up there punters i wonder who will pay when there ends up very little in the way off numbers arriving then of course don’t forget to factor in the non arrival of palmair and the not needed seasonal workers as the hotels close down well that’s me had my moan

The ferries haven’t gone anywhere, Mogit.

The last time I used the ‘plane was when the ferry was cancelled and Condor paid for us to fly from Southampton. As we were also relying on taking the car they also paid for a hire car in Jersey.

Helier Clement may remember this as he based an entire story on this rare occurrence. I believe that Helier thought it was a wind up but it certainly wasn’t.

The only slight misrepresentation in the saga was that the booking wasn’t in the above name, although the narrative was!

I agree with most comments – Jersey is in a fantastic position to capture the short-haul market at the moment: boosting tourism & the economy – what do we do? Whack the opportunity over the head with the mind-numbing policy of detering visitors via punitive landing fees. Doesn’t anyone care for this place any more?

Jersey do not operate an airport tax. This is confusion brought about by flybe and other airlines. Landing charges is a commercial issue not a tax. Its like selling a coffee and asking an extra 20p for the landlords rent. Why our government does not put a stop to this type of marketing l leave to your imagination.

It amazes me that people say we have so called “CHEAP” arilines/fares. It is ok to but flights at £2.00 or £10.00 each way but by the time you have added the costs for baggage and all the little extras that SHOULD be included with flying. Even before the taxes there is no such thing as a cheap airline.

As for the sea routes that is a joke in itself overpriced unable to run a decent service due to mechanical problems. Is it not time for some in our so called goverment to sort the situation out once and for all:

unable to provide the service level as in the conract.
SOLUTION: kick them out get a decent operator in that can do the job 100 times better then what we have now. or do our states members not think us tax payers are not worthy of it.

    Agree
If they had a decent operator for the sea routes and did more routes I am sure many more would use the boat as an alternative to flying.

Why not a boat to Southampton?
The present operator has now became a farce, and have had enough chances to get their act together for years.

‘Why not a boat to Southampton?’

What’s the point? There’s already one to Portsmouth (or two when they’re running properly).

What would be convenient would be one to London (Gravesend Tilbury or Dartford ferry terminals). A nice leisurely overnight boat in each direction. It could bring the hire cars in as well.

I often used to wonder if I could get a ride on the Marshlea or the Ronez to Erith when they came to the ECC quarries wharf. About as much chance as getting a cheap standby with Beauport or Netjets to Biggin Hill!

Being held to ransom on a small island south of the UK, my captors FLYBE and CONDOR Ferries are demanding money with menaces if I want to escape.
If I stay I will be flogged to death forced to earn basic wage and have to give 90% of this back to the local government in taxes GST Social security, and Rent the little I have left will have to go for a few stale crumbs of bread at £2.40 per loaf.

I assume that you are too young to remember, we used to have two conventional ferries going back and forth to the UK, plus a cargo boat we could travel on, what would you rather do queue at an airport, go through the very lengthy check-in procedure and then get told your aircraft is delayed or travel on a conventional ferry and chill out!

I hope the Airport charges keep increasing!

Its helping to curtail all the chavs & undesirables from travelling, REALLY don’t like sharing an enclosed space with that type! In the long run I’m hoping this will put an end to the “Low cost airlines” altogether.

    @26
You know what they say, “Theres a boat in th…” Oh right, you can’t afford it… Perhaps Social Services should provide some kind of concession for Chavs/Layabouts who wish to leave the island. One way tickets obviously, it would cost the taxpayer initially, but Jersey would benifit in the long run, less handouts for fags, booze, leggings and Sky tv!

    Wish I were younger, Mogit.

I can remember right back to the St Julien, St Patrick, the various Isles and the Brittany. I moved to England not too long after the arrival of the Caesarea and the Sarnia. The Falaise was the first one you could drive straight onto after being converted meanwhile.

My grandfather travelled from time to time on what he called the London boats as a passenger on a cargo boat, rather like going on the Goodwill (if they’ll take you) nowadays.

    £750 a month!
I haven’t charged that kind of price for several years, must of been a very small bedsit (shudder).

Don’t blame you for emigrating, if you couldn’t get a good enough job to pay for a return ticket to the UK, than you must of been in dire straits and its very unlikely you were contributing anything toward the Jersey economy, probably a burden in fact (social handouts by any chance), so it will of suited Jersey as much as yourself to leave! If only we could persuade more people in the lower class bracket to depart.

Anyway, sounds like you are much happier there, so good for you… Wonder why someone with as much hostility towards Jersey would bother themselves commenting on a Jersey forum, you would think they would rather just forget such a horrible place… Still, good for you!

    Gotta laugh!

In common with several other posters on the forum, you appear to be concerned about the existence of so called ‘chavs’ in Jersey.

How does one go about identifying the species?

Do they, for example, write things such as:

    No!

Generally they can be found smoking outside pubs in St Helier or Social security while several small children run around in diapers. The females usually wear leggings and have very tight pony tails I believe referred to as an “Essex facelift”.

The males always have tattoos, quite commonly on their faces and wear track suits, although they look like the least likely athletes you have ever seen!

    Try this :
Log on to your computer. Then get someone else in the house to come on to the forum, pick a topic and scroll down to the last posting (would suggest they pick one with at least 30 postings ).
You then have to scroll backwards and see how many postings before you guess the topic correctly.
I started at number 39 on this one. It`s great – had a rough idea then got to 35 which threw me as it was talking about British Airways. The next lot made it more confusing – we appeared to be talking about high rents but then 30 mentioned airport charges (briefly), when I got to 23 I felt more confident and to be sure read another few before making my guess. T
Seriously try it – as an alternative get as many people together and bet on how many postings there will be before we see either “Chavs” or “4×4″ mentioned.
    Adios comrades
