THE goods and services tax should go up to four per cent next year, Senator Francis Le Gresley said this morning

He has lodged an amendment to the 2011 Budget which would halve the increase proposed by the Treasury Minister, who will argue for a five per cent rise when it is debated early next month.

Senator Le Gresley’s proposition adds to growing pressure on Treasury Minister Senator Philip Ozouf to rethink putting up GST by two per cent.

Senator, let’s just get on with it, and stop fannying around the edges. You will just postpone an increase to the 5% anyway. It will be much easier for business to go to 5% in one jump, then two incremental at 1% each.

It has to go there, so let’s get things moving, and stop all this naval gazing. More important things to get working on, like publishing school results!

Leave the man alone, 4% isn’t ideal but what’s the alternative? Go along with Ozouf’s 5%.

Very poor use of English in the JEP article:
“argue for a five per cent rise when it is debated.” A five per cent rise would be 5% of 3%. What we are actually talking about is a 67% rise and not a 5% rise!

Very nice man but a weakling. Sucked into the clique. We need real leaders with character
Not muppets like Ozouf. Get your house in order first, then look at tax.

The real problem is not GST – GST was introduced to fill the hole left after the implementation of 20/20 and 0/10. Banks, all in finance industry, and non-Jersey are laughing all the way to the bank while the ordinary person pays more and more.
STOP pandering to the finance industry as if it is a goose that lays golden eggs. Some of the eggs are rotten and the golden ones are being laid somewhere else.

I think this increase is a good idea. We have to accept the financial mess we are in (whether or not it is the politicians’ fault). This is the fairest way to fill the gap

14 Matt..we are not in a mess..we have a Govt that will not stop spending out of control..do you really think if we give them more of our money they will suddenly be truly contrite and stop….they just expand into whatever they have then Tax again…it is a bottomless pit..only regime change can tackle it. no matter how many of your hard earned quids you give ‘em they’ll spend ‘em..an excercise in utter futility..

Bondit: Ok, so what do you want? Massive unemployment, and much much higher taxes as a result of less people earning income.

What an absolutely foolish response you have!

Jacqueline, the promise was never to 2013, it was to June 2012, which is when the proposal kicks in.

An Island that so passionately promotes Tax avoidance for the Wealthy, pays consultants and senior civil servants obscene salaries, but burdens the working class with yet more expense and taxes. Why not just deport all low earners,a sort of Ecconomic cleansing of Jersey. Then the rich and greedy can continue there delusional power trip.

Mark G: You are correct – it was 2012, but yes, they are bringing it in a year early. So Jacquie: we were both wrong.

DingDong: In absolute value terms, the wealthy pay much more in taxes, which is a penalty for being entrepreneurial! I can’t fathom what you are saying! It is the other way around, the wealthy subsidise this island, and it is abotu time it changed!
