THE importance of continued investment in Island sport has been stressed again by Jersey Sports Council chairman Hugh Raymond.

Ahead of tonight’s rally at Fort Regent organised to demonstrate opposition to proposed budget cuts and a GST increase, Mr Raymond said that cutting budgets would have a detrimental effect on all States’ services, and that every effort had to be made to keep sport at the top of the agenda.

He declined an invitation to speak at the rally, however, saying that he did not believe this was the appropriate arena for sport to get their message across.

‘Sport has a major effect on all in the Island in terms of health, education and, in a limited way, economic growth,’ he said. ‘Our sportsmen are ambassadors whenever they travel off the Island so it is vital we continue to support them.’

You are so right Hugh.I hope the politicians are listening. It should also be remembered the numerous individuals who give up there time free to organise events continued financial support is not a lot to ask.If it is withdrawn one asks what we are paying all these higher rates of tax for other than to fund uncontrolled and indisciplined public expenditure?

I heard him on the radio today as well. He talked about the increased travel costs. I really hope that taxpayers’ money is not funding sportsmen and officials on overseas trips!
