Why spoil the promenade? There is a road there already
Thursday 25th November 2010, 3:00PM GMT.
From Chris Whitworth.
HAVING attended virtually all the pre-incinerator public meetings, I recall being told that the road along Commercial Buildings would have to be widened to allow unrestricted access for both the increase in refuse trucks, as well as emergency vehicles, should the need occur.
At no point do I recall talk of turning the walkway adjacent to Green Street slip into an emergency access road.
Further despoliation of this area is totally unnecessary, as one only has to walk along this fine stretch of Victorian promenade to realise that there is a perfectly ideal access road alongside the JEC Power Station (as shown in the attached picture).
As well as arming myself with a camera to take this picture, I also took along a measuring tape and found that this unobstructed stretch of road leading from the car park adjacent to the TA building is over nine feet wide at any point.
Therefore, as Jersey politicians are currently struggling to reduce expenditure, I seriously question the spending of money on altering a perfectly good walkway when an ideal solution already exists.

Win a share of £10,000
2012 is the year of the London Olympics and to celebrate this great event the Jersey Evening Post, in association with sponsors Ogier is giving all sporting clubs a chance to win a share of £10,000.
Maybe it is to do with the idiotic underground road causing traffic problems when it is built?

A great piece of work on Mr Whitworth’s part. If this is true he should be working for the States of Jersey saving us money.

Although this road would inevitably provide suitable access, the ball has been set in motion. A victorian promenade will needless be destroyed, and re-laid at a vast expense to the long suffering tax payer. Ahh ‘ The Jersey Way ‘!

Unfortunately Chris the narowest fire engines are at least 7 foot 6 inches wide, the widest consideably more and that does not include the mirrors which probably add at least another foot each side. I think on that basis this road is slightly too narrow to get those vehicles down in a hurry.
