Plans to rebuild the school had been put back a year

AN ISLAND primary school has been branded unfit for 21st century education, with inadequate toilet facilities, classrooms which are too small and roofs that leak.

St Martin’s School, which also has two temporary classrooms and a toilet block housed in 15-year-old portable buildings, had been due a total rebuild in 2012 but the project was recently put back a year by the Education Minister.

Senator Francis Le Gresley, who has detailed the dire condition of the school in a proposition to the States, believes the school is no longer fit for use and urgently needs to be rebuilt.

He is now challenging Education Minister James Reed’s decision to put back the £7.7 million rebuild from 2012 to 2013. In an amendment to the draft Budget statement which was lodged this week, Senator Le Gresley says there should be no further delay in getting this project moving.

As there are too many primary schools with not enough kids why not use the opportunity to close it and make some real savings, if its possible to relocate them to other schools in neighbouring parishes?

While i am all for investment in States property are we not going though a so called rough patch? Are the States not ramming down our throats that we need to cut back, pay more and except job loss’s? As 1.Godzilla states, if its broken close it down. Invest the £7 million when the time comes that Jersey is back on its feet and has zillions of pounds to play with…..oh i forgot that they already have half a billion in the bank but refuse to spend some of it. How about taxing us more to fund the refurb? Senator Francis Le Gresley should know that if the funding is released to St Martins then we will suffer further hikes in tax. Today’s headline is GST off food and heating? GREAT but he catch is to pay even more again…….

On the subject of GST the headline says Domestic Heating, does this mean Oil or does it also include electric? Only time will tell.

Once again, a States asset that has been allowed to go to rot through lack of maintenance.

Most private property owners, upon seeing a damp patch on the ceiling get the leak on the roof sorted out and once dried out, re-decorate. Its not rocket science !

And I thought that the States always paid for expert advice ……..

I call this solution the Westmoreland Option:- In Henry V, Westmoreland cried “Would that we had but now 10,000 of those men in England who do no work today” when preparing to face the seemingly indomitable French in their overwhelming numbers.

Jersey has over 1,300 people out of work at present. Do NONE of those people possess the skills to help a local firm of builders (some of which reaped the benefits of the boom years) who help sponsor the refurbishment with materials?

If they will not put effort into their community, even if they can but continue to receive benefits then each refusal loses them money. It may seem draconian but putting something back into the community is far more important than there being something to be taken out.
