HEALTH officials this morning issued an urgent warning about a food supplement which turns into a dangerous industrial-strength bleach when used as directed.

They said that Miracle Mineral Solution, which is available online and claims to be a treatment for everything from acne to cancer, HIV and bird flu, can cause respiratory failure, vomiting, diarrhoea and severe dehydration.

Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr Susan Turnbull said instructions that came with the product directed users to mix it with lemon juice or some other citric acid.

However, the mixing process creates a lethal cocktail of chlorine dioxide, a potent bleach used for stripping textiles and industrial water treatment.
