The Queen on her last visit to the Island in 2005

THE Queen has been asked to officially open the new Town Park as part of her Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Deputy Jackie Hilton, who was part of the Town Park Group set up in August 1997 to campaign for the park, has asked the Chief Minister whether he would request that the Queen officially open the park in 2012, when Her Majesty will celebrate 60 years as Britain’s monarch.

‘Senator Terry Le Sueur has spoken to the Lieutenant-Governor, Lieutenant-General Andrew Ridgway, who has passed the request on,’ said Deputy Hilton.

Great idea, but just one thing….
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST US TAX PAYERS.
I will do it for free and won’t have to worry about somewhere to park as I live near town and can walk in.

I was watching an old episode of Bergerac the other noght, and it had a shot of the Royal Square when States members were able to park outside. Then other shots were taken around Broad Stree where there was quite bit of on street parking.

It reminded me that Jersey in the 70s and 80′s was a great, happy place. Much more tolerance and acceptance.

The current relentless war against the motorist is akin to a quiet civil war, and the only outcome will be the distruction of society, as people cannot park, and businesses either move out of town or succum to the internet competition.

The building of the town park, and the loss of adequate parking will suck the life blood out of this area.

Get ex-senator syuart syvret to open the park as it was his idea in the first place. I’m sure he’d do it for nothing and as Jersey’s most popular ever politician and ex-father of the house it would be far more appropriate. He did serve the island for 20 years and always stood up for what he believed in. In fact the park should be named after him.

Whilst I agree that at one time Syvret was a very popular and effective politician, I think you’ll find now that the only supporters he has now are a very small group of deluded conspiracy theorists who are equally as bizarre and paranoid.

Yes S Syvret is a better choice. We already have an overpaid Lieutenant-Governor and do not need extra expenses. We also have to pay for all the costly errors this government and civil servants are making.

Now they might raid the rainy day fund as it fits with their ideology, nice to be seen with the Royals, keep the Plebs away, just invite all your cronies who have benefited from your 0/10 tax. That will be a crowd of 10,000 the other 80,000 can be cattled into Springfield and out to Vallee Des Vaux were no one can see us.

    Hi Eddie Micheals @9

Hate to disappoint you, and just like every human being whether politician or not Stuart Syvret has his bad points one being he is a very poor team player.
Should you take the time and trouble to read his open ,honest and frank reports, and if you have a genuine interest in the truth and have an open mind. It will be difficult not to agree with many of views.

He uses a sledge hammer instead of diplomacy but he was in politics for almost twenty years, if you read the comments on this JEP blog you can feel the frustration of many of the posters after just a couple. He knows a lot more than we do, and still cares enough to fight on. Would you ?

By the way you say and I quote,

I think you’ll find now that the only supporters he has now are a very small group of deluded conspiracy theorists who are equally as bizarre and paranoid.

I am sorry if I seem like that to you, a bit over weight maybe, and other normal human traights but bizarre and paranoid. I suggest you take a look in the mirror.

Yes you are right. The park should be named after Stuart Syvret, as it is something the island doesn’t want ( see election results) and it is costing the taxpayer money they don’t want to spend. Seems like the perfect send off for the man.

Wil the states give another day off for this fiasco,1.5 million in public sector pay, added to the other 1.5 for a royal wedding day off this is more brown nosing and symptomatic of the rot and lack of moral fibre…tell the small guy he must pay more to feed his kids and keep warm because the establishment have squandered and continue to squander Zillions of pounds….your money by the way not their money…and that’s where the mental shift needs to take place…this is our money you throw away…why because you can just tax the daylights out of the workers it is unjust ,deeply immoral and unadulterated sociopathy..remember the Romanian politician who wouldn’t listen..Nicolae Ceauscu..think on.

I’ve heard a lot of similar opinions on Syvret, however, when I ask people to qualify their opinion, 99.9% of the time, they’ve not read what he has to say, and are frankly utterly ignorant of his views and what he actually fights for.

It’s easy to brand that nasty man saying things we don’t want to hear about our beloved island as a lunatic, but if people can be bothered to push past the fallacies peddled by the powers that be, you’ll find that reality is quite the opposite.

Spend a fortune and it certainly will cost a fortune with the special branch security and full entourage. Still the bailiff and leading so called vip politicians will have a good time.

What an absolute nonsense when we haven’t got enough money to give islanders hospital operations within a year. They suffer but we can afford to iduldge the Queen

Absolute mismanagement of the taxpayers’ money.

Deputy Hilton resign and also any other politician that puts an expensive royal opening above health of the islanders. For health read unnecessary drawn out suffering.

I suspect that the park will have to be given a regal name to tempt the Lady to come over and open it.
Surely we can find a local peasant,a mere mortal, to do the job, maybe a person who gives their time freely to our society.

‘I suspect that the park will have to be given a regal name to tempt the Lady to come over and open it.’

If they call it the ‘Diamond Jubilee Park’ and either it doesn’t get finished in time (very likely) or HM has a more pressing engagement(even more likely), then they could invite either Neil or Anne to come and open it. No loss of face would then be involved.

Failing that, there must be at least one Diamond living in the island.

They could also feature a diamond shaped garden somewhere in the design to subtly convey an association with the great event.

We should call it Sir Frank Walker Gardens.

Perhaps the Queen would like to give him his gong whilst in the Island. A Head of State meeting a former Head of State of equal importance.

We should also make sure the park is preserved for the type of person who knows how to behave properly and issue passes; the oiks we get in other parks can be prevented from enjoying what the rest of us have paid for.

Forget the queen coming why not auction off the park and it’s complete cost to one of our very wealthy local residents leave it to them to decide and pay for who opens it. In return for them buying the park in auction they can gift it to the island, but have it named after them. What a fantastic way to let your name live on. Not quite the same spirit as TB Davis and Florence Boot to name a couple, but surely worth considering.
