Extradited accountant charged in Australia
Wednesday 29th December 2010, 3:00PM GMT.
A JERSEY accountant is facing a jail term of up to ten years after he was charged in an Australian Court this week in connection with the country’s biggest tax fraud investigation.
Philip Eric de Figueiredo, who was extradited from Jersey the day before Christmas Eve, has been charged with two counts of conspiracy to defraud the Australian taxpayer and one count of money laundering.
The 56-year-old travelled with an Australian police escort from Jersey to Australia last week and appeared in Brisbane Magistrates’ Court on Monday. Mr de Figueiredo’s lawyer, Phil Dunn, QC, said that his client would ‘vigorously’ defend the charges.
