TWO of the Island’s flagship museums have become the latest casualties of cutbacks and will close over the winter.

They have been mothballed because Jersey Heritage can no longer afford to keep them open.

Jersey Museum will close from the end of this month to April, a period of time when visitor numbers are usually down compared to the summer months. The Maritime Museum closed last month and will also re-open for the summer.

Front-of-house staff at the Museum and the Maritime Museum will not be working while the sites are closed, but administration workers will continue to be employed. Staff were informed earlier this year that their hours would be reduced as part of the cost-cutting drive.

Seems a sensible option to reduce the hours they are open to save money.

Unfortunately our ‘flagship’ museums just aren’t attracting enough visitors. Now what does that tell you about the rest of the fleet?
