A SAFETY valve which burst a pipe, shooting scalding steam over a builder last week, should not have triggered when the man was nearby, according to a representative of the company in charge of the plant.

Two investigations are being carried out into the accident at the incinerator last Tuesday, when Igor Fernandez was hit by a jet of steam from a pipe that was being tested for pressure.

Twenty-five-year-old Mr Fernandez’s face, neck and shoulders were burned by the steam, which shot out of the pipe with such force that bits of debris were embedded in his skin.

Not only are the Health and Safety Inspectorate investigating what happened, but the company in charge of the site, CSBC Ltd, are also conducting their own investigation.
