Hospital skills shortfall costs an extra £1m

Wednesday 19th January 2011, 3:00PM GMT.

Health Minister Anne Pryke

LOCUMS covering the duties of four doctors on restricted duties at the Hospital have cost the taxpayer more than £1 million, the Health Minister has revealed.

That amount does not include the salaries of the doctors who are banned from carrying out operations.

It was also claimed during question time in the States yesterday that one of the doctors on restricted duties, believed to be consultant gynaecologist John Day, is desk-bound and has seen just one patient since last May.

This whole hospital debacle is a disgrace.Ann Pryke is simply not up to the job….fancy leaving all these elements dangling…easy when the wages are being paid by us…would never happen with private money…John Day desk bound…been paid to do nothing for yonks due to incompetency at a staggering level..Why we deserve an answer….? important issues in the civil service are left to bounce around the corridors…as the mentality is you get paid the same for grasping the nettle as not and there in lies the bulk of the problem which a strong leader would remedy…Take your own medicine.

This is the Ozouf party. Only the tip of the iceberg, none of them are up to the job. Use your vote and get them out in October. What about the junior doctor who earned £25K a month Anne, did you forget about him and the golden handshakes to the formed CHief Nurse and COE.?

Were are the tough decisions now Sen Ozouf. These managers are clearly not up to the job, make the decision and get rid of Mrs Pryke and the entire management team. Put the Gp’s and Nurses in charge.

Oh Please Ann do not take us for fools…what kind of locums earn a quarter of a million each…? the the other doctors wages on top …why do we have not fit for purpose personnel….if they are not up to scratch…get rid and replace…that is what happens in the real world with real money….can you imagine that happening in a private hospital….NO.

Ridiculous situation, no fault of John Day but down to management, there is more to this than this article tells us, just there to wind us up.

If this is not a complete breakdown in a public service please tell us what is ?

    a) Wait for a year to have a non life threatening operation.

    b) Do not wait as long as you can afford to pay, using taxpayer funded facilities, served quickly by consultants who enjoy private work.

    c) Administered by layer upon layer of new and some not so new but all extremly well paid managers. Unbelivable for a ship wreck of a hospital.

    d) Cut backs ( not for managers ) but for hydrotherapy pool, patient transport ( postponed), A and E and higher user pays charges.

Minister Anne Pryke has been given a fair and even chance to effect change and has failed so should now resign. The well funded Jersey Health service has never been in such bad shape.

It takes 6 months for the hospital to deal with a patient complaint, which has to go through a committee, no wonder health is in such a mess!

Not through choice John Day has been on garden leave for years. His dedication to the Jersey NHS over many years has been a life saver for many women in the Island. Yes he has a private clinic but so have others. He’s a brilliant surgeon who has been used as a ‘scape goat’ for who !!! I wonder. Sort it out management & let Mr Day do what he’s so good at.

Why are four doctors banned from carrying out operations?????I may be missing some vital fact here but surely if a doctor has been banned from carrying out operations he is not up to the job and his services should no longer be required?Obviously we already know about the John Day issue but can anyone enlighten us about the others please?

When our glorious leaders allowed thousands more people to come to this tiny island, they obviously did not think about the effect this would have on the medical service.

I am off to the UK to have tests not available in Jersey and probably an operation the Jersey medical profession says does not exist. I will be paying.

Anne Pryke is a total joke.

She is very power hungry, hence she makes comments which put her in the public eye, but she never actually makes any decisions.

Jersey is slowly becomming a difficult place to live because people like ANNE PRYKE are in charge of spending tax payers money!

Surley there is something very badly wrong when a publicly funded hospital with extensive facilities and employing consultants who are capable of carrying out non life threatning operations in two weeks to the private sector but the public have to wait ( as published ) more than a year.

The Uk offers a maximum waiting time of 18 weeks with the option of going private paid for by the NHS if this time frame is not met.

Jersey is supposed to be a wealthy island.

One has to ask what is going on ?

@21 Whats going on is that the hospital is top heavy with Management who have continually failed us over the years. They have been heavily criticised by Veritas report and still they remain in post.
Anne Pryke employs even more senior Managers from the UK on overpaid contracts and what do they do? employ more senior Managers from the UK on overpaid contracts to shuffle paper and ‘make recommendations’.
The whole thing is a farce, you couldn’t make it up.
