Proposals to cut eight Deputies withdrawn

Changes to the make up of the States could be left to an independent electoral commission

PROPOSALS to cut eight Deputies’ seats from the States Chamber have been withdrawn at the last minute, but Members were this morning due to vote on reversing last year’s decision to cut four Senators.

An amendment to move Jersey’s first full general election in which all seats could change hands on the same day to 2014 from 2019 has already been approved, but even that change hinges on agreement of the main reform proposition by the Privileges and Procedures Committee.

States Members returned this morning to day three of the first sitting back since the Christmas break to resume debate on Senator Sarah Ferguson’s proposal to reverse last year’s decision to cut two Senatorial seats at each of the next two elections.

Changes to the make up of the States could be left to an independent electoral commission.

So, there we have it – another waste of time as turkeys are not generally known to vote for Christmas.

And, of course, they wouldn’t dream of letting the electorate vote on the constitution of the States ….. they may not be the brightest stars in the sky but they know what the result would be.

Good..! the ordinary mans has little enough effective representation as it is…..But how in Heavens name does it need to take eight years for a proper election to take place…ther can be no plausible excuse for this disgusting feet dragging.

Cut the constables! They need to stick to parish issues. Deputies represent the parishes in the states, and senators represent the island. Seems easy. Plus make sure the deputies/parishes are more proportional. How can P&P keep suggesting things. Not exactly independent or neutral, being headed by a constable. But then who can come in to make a decision, and who will accept it. Clothier didn’t make much difference.

Tony, you are right. I despair, we all despair. The States Chamber, with or without a Bailiff, will go on debating as Jersey slowly sinks beneath the waves.

From the noises now being made by Phillip Ozouf and Daniel Wimberly, an unlikely pairing if ever there was one, it seems that an Electoral Commision is in the offing.
The fact is that the present system is farcical and pleases only those that do not want change.
Modernisation and reform of the house might result in the fresh blood and renaissance that the house so much needs if it is not to stagger in to moribund insignificance.
