Fall in unemployment figures

Friday 21st January 2011, 2:59PM GMT.

Chief Minister Terry Le Sueur.

JERSEY’S economy showed signs of recovery today after figures revealed that unemployment has fallen to its lowest level for six months.

A total of 1,210 people were registered unemployed last month, 100 fewer than the previous month and the lowest since last June.

And almost half of those who got jobs during December were aged between 16 and 24, with many having found employment through the Advance to Work training and work placement scheme for school leavers.

But the number of people out of work was still 90 higher than the same period in 2009.

Chief Minister Terry Le Sueur today said that the figures could show that the Island was beginning to recover from the recession.

Excellent numbers especially at this time of year. This is an endorsement of states policies and shows that Jersey has weathered the financial crisis well.

Well done Terry, Philip and Alan.

However, if the States paid lower benefits to the uneunemployed, this would encourage more lazy locals to get off their couches and find work.

I think most of them who can’t find a job have simply left the island.
This is the time of year when unemployment is at its lowest till Easter.

That’s the logical way of looking at it.

    D Mc S (1) Excellent numbers

    Dear, D Mc S
1,210 people registered unemployed excellent news? I suspect you have been following the posts of the so called Real Truthseeker, whilst looking through rose tinted glasses. Nobody in Jersey registers as unemployed for the fun of it, the problem is that firms are shedding staff; just read the paper. Bella (2) is correct, the imports (non locals) have probably left as benefits are better and housing cheaper, back home.

These are figures from our local statistics office, hence the spin is always positive. Strip out the surge of additional students enrolled at Highlands and the figures would look even less rosy.

Excellent numbers? These people want jobs, not numbers!

“…the figures could show that the Island was beginning to recover from the recession.”

Its recorded that January figures, every year, always see a reduction in unemployed. This is nothing new and does not cover the fact that Jersey has 1210 people unemployed with this set to rise over the next 6 months.

Get real….wait till the next figures come out. You can’t take December as a recovery as many were taken on for the the Christmas period and have since been let go back into the system.

    Sadly these figures of unemployment do not include;

    1. Those that are signed off ill (genuinely) and unemployed
    2. Those that choose not to register as there is no benefit. i.e. not entitled to Income Support
    3. Those that are non employed and do not wish to work because they have other sources of income.
4 Those that are self employed but have no work coming in.
    5. Those that have previoyusly registered and realised that there is no benefit.
    6. Those that just don’t bother.

Other than that, all looks rosy.

what a load of old cobblers ! most of us didn’t claim last month as we got jobs at Jersey Post or play.com packing the many parcels and now we have all been let go as obviously we are not needed. We all knew it was only a temp contract but for some of us who actually don’t want to be sat on our backsides ( thank you D mc C) this is the best we have got. There are no permanent jobs at the moment for most of us and I can assure you its not from lack of trying.
So if anyone out there reads this and has a job going for a nursery officer and is happy to take on a single parent with 2 children both still at school themselves and is willing for me to either job share or do part time then please get in touch !

DMS utter tripe. The island is in a total mess spiralling downwards daily now. However even thorugh your rose coloured glasses you should be able to see reality.

As someone has rightly pointed out these figures are not accurate many people fall through the net. I believe the total to be much higher just like the official population level is much higher. It wouldn’t surprise me if the true figure was 2-3,000. I personally know of some who just can’t be bothered to register as unemployment as they know it is a total waste of time and effort on their part.

Some have gone traveling prefering to be away looking for other places with a better atmosphere and more amiable lifestyle. They may return when the economic turmoil has passed and there are sufficient realitically waged jobs in Jersey to enable them not to be on the breadline. On the other hand should they find a place where greed and back stabbing and exploitation is less of an issue they will not bother coming back.

As per your claims that lots of locals are on benefits this is unsubstanciated. Since more than 50% are new to the island I would expect more than 50% to be from these groups, the law of averages would say this.

However it would be good if the government would publish figures as to the origins of those on welfare then everyone would know what is truely what. This would then shut up certain people.

I think I might be able to help, you can work part time or job share and you have a couple of kids?

Can you start at 0800, finish at 1700, work weekends for single time, bank holidays too. Sorry I’m being silly, that’s what everyone else does. Tell you what, let me know when you would like to work, if one of the kids is unwell just don’t come in, no notice needed I’ll make my other staff work around you, if you’d like to give me a call on those days/hours you fancy doing a bit we’ll structure the business around you.

Fancy having more kids – don’t worry, I’ll give you 6 months off with pay, I’m here to help not like I’m trying to make money or anything – can’t imagine why no one’s swept you up already.

Presumably they would prefer unemploymwnt to soar rather than decrease – that would suit their agenda better, however the unemployment data and inflation figures are great news for the majority of Jersey residents, whatever their circumstances, and are proof that Jersey has done exceptionally well in weathering the GLOBAL financial crisis.

    a. I can work from 8.30 to 3.30 total of 7 hrs so not exactly part time ! & I dont mind not having a lunch hour.
    b. My kids are not ill that often and whilst I was employed for 14 years in my previous job I only had 2 or 3 days off in TOTAL ! I was and an not a surker.
    c. I dont fancy having more kids as I cant afford to, so dont think its fair, that said if I did I would be housed by the states easily ! and would get income support to live on. Problem solved.
    d. I need Term time only because it costs so much for child care ! most child minders charge £6 to £7 an hour, if child care was less then I would happily work the holidays.

sorry if you think I want to much but I had my children because I wanted them and at the time was married and could afford them. It was not my fault my ex husband went off with another woman and then decided he could not afford to keep his first two children and that he didnt want to work anymore ! hence the no maintenance !

I am happy to work but circumstance mean that I have my children to look after and fit around as I dont want them running the streets as latch key kids sorry if that makes me a mother who cares what her children do. That is the problem with todays children most are left to hang out in town and parents half the time dont know where they are let alone what they are doing well sorry not this mother ! I CARE what my children are doing DO YOU ?????

Obviously you are in work or are retired ?? Lucky you.

I was employed by a States dept and after 33yrs service, it was thank you and goodbye.

Trying to find a job at 59, er how can I put it, people are polite but they want younger staff, although they won’t say that to your face.

So you register unemployed and what happens ? Well, you have to show SS you are seeking work with written evidence and you know full well that you and others are all contacting the same companies….. and the SS staff know there is nothing out there, but they are just following procedures, so around and around we go.

So come D Mc S, you have all the answers and can therefore find each one of us the perfect job to make us as happy as you.

Once again a clever manipulation of figures from the SOJ Statistics unit with our Chief Minister attempting to take the credit for this fudge of statistics.

Everyone knows that during December and the lead up to Christmas more staff are taken on than any other time of the year by the Post Office and companies such as Amazon and Play.com to post out all the Christmas orders. In January the unemployment figures will leap again.

Compared too the majority of places, Jersey is doing very well. Housing prices haven;t burst, unemployment reducing, interest rates stable – and the vocal minority still whinge and whine. You have never had it so good.

If you have anything to complain about it is your own doing.

I used to have dealings with the States Statistics unit, when an officer came visiting, to check price differences from six months earlier.

A new officer turned up who was an old friend. I asked to see the list for the first time ever and suggested that the list contained the wrong items.

I was trying to be genuinely helpful and my friend the officer agreed with my suggestions and would take them back to her superiors.

They never called again. Apart from that incident there does seem to be a very rosy outlook from this states department compared to small medium business actual economic reality.
