Competition regulator to seek a local focus

THE Island’s competition regulator is intent on reducing the amount of work it does looking at international mergers so that it can focus on more local issues.

And it wants to be able to make changes to the rules so that it is not legally obliged to examine so many mergers in future. In 2010, the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority was notified of a record number of mergers.

John Curran now heads both Jersey’s Competition Regulatory Authority and Guernsey’s Office of Utility Regulation, and last week he addressed the January lunch of the Institute of Directors at the Grand Hotel.

Mr Curran said that as far he was concerned, the work of the regulator in a competition sense was to protect and enhance the interests of the consumer.

    The consumer? When they sort out import/export costs and travel prices to and from Jersey then they might start to earn their wages. Until then forget it they are a total waste of money in my opinion.
