Dawn Pace, ready for the Caribbean-themed evening
MORE than £6,000 was raised by Islanders over the weekend to help people in Haiti a year after the country was hit by a devastating earthquake.
An estimated 250,000 people were killed by the quake last January and latest figures suggest that around 800,000 people are still homeless and living in tented camps.
This weekend the charity Jersey Side by Side marked the anniversary of the disaster by holding two very different events to raise funds for the country.
The money will go towards the charity’s campaign to raise £33,000 to pay for 12 corn-grinding mills to help mothers feed their families.
On Saturday morning £2,130 was raised at a sale of unwanted Christmas presents at Fort Regent while that night at least £4,000 was raised by an evening of Caribbean food, music and entertainment at St Clement’s Parish Hall.
