Growers ‘starved of land as owners wait for rezoning’

Assistant Economic Development Minister Len Norman
FARMERS and flower growers are being starved of valuable land because Planning will not make a decision about the future of derelict and disused glass houses, the Assistant Economic Development Minister says.
St Clement Constable Len Norman said that good land was being wasted because landowners were not renting it out in the hope that they could sell it for millions to developers.
He added that it was time Planning issued strong guidance so that either the land could be sold to builders or returned to farming use.

Win a share of £10,000
2012 is the year of the London Olympics and to celebrate this great event the Jersey Evening Post, in association with sponsors Ogier is giving all sporting clubs a chance to win a share of £10,000.
I can tell you the land will be sold to Dandara for an undisclosed sum.
Ex Sen Len – stick to pointless changes to the speed limit which has functioned perfectly well for decades.

…. and it should be returned for farming use!!!

Greenhouses can be taken down and the land re-used for farming you know – has been done.

Well said Len. Agriculture may be in a dip, but world food prices are escalating fast. As an island we are more likely to need food than more immigration and houses.

No argument – the land should be turned to agricultural use.It would be the height of folly to allow the land to be built on. The world is going to experience a growing shortage in foodstuffs, perhaps not immediately but all the signs are there to indicate this is becoming a real problem – watch the rising prices. Jersey has the ability to grow a lot of its own food so it should ensure that land that can grow crops should not be built on – once this happens the land is lost for all time.

Just say no to more housing estates on farmland. There are plenty of run down houses in town that could do with refurbs, at least focus on those before giving up the green zones.

“The world is going to experience a growing shortage in foodstuffs”
In the new Island plan there are fields being looked at for development that are not being used for agriculture as the owners are waiting for the “golden payday” of permission to build on.
If the land is arable protect it for future use of growing etc which will save all the shipping costs of importing foodstuffs/feed.

If they can tell me how come jersey products are cheaper in the Uk considering the VAT and freight cost…

Before there were two strong groups competing for land, farmers were offered zero rent in return for their branchage being done – take it or leave it.
Now former farmers who were squeezed out of the industry want to potentially cash in their pension pot the cry goes up we want the land.
You can’t have your cake and eat it.
