Marine activities ‘are a threat to wildlife’

Société Jersiaise marine biology section chairman Nicolas Jouault

WILDLIFE wardens should be employed to protect Jersey’s animals from jet-skiers and other watercraft, say the Société Jersiaise.

Nicolas Jouault, chairman of the marine biology section of the Société, would like to see a wildlife warden employed to police the Island’s shores.

He said that sustained noise and general disturbance made by jet-skis caused birds to move from their resting and feeding areas.

‘We don’t want to be killjoys – people have the right to enjoy themselves,’ he said, but added that the disturbance could lead to exhaustion in the animals.

Think we need to get the hut painted white and a few life guards on the beach first……I think there are a few more important things deserving of priority in the current economic climate.

    Absolutely Nick!
I have reason to be near the gutter that runs from Icho Tower to La Sambue on a regular basis .
I have been disgusted by the cavalier attitude of waterskiers using that area at low tide during the summer.
On one occasion there were three boats going up and down the narrow channel for three hours with a spearfishing competition being held in exactly the same spot! All this less than 75m from either shore, in a Ramsar area and less than 25m from children in the shallows.
This was reported to Harbours and the boat numbers given. The next day the very same thing happened and when challenged by canoe across their path the only comment was ‘I lent my boat to someone else yesterday!’

‘We don’t want to be killjoys’ well its a little late for that isnt it?
What exactly are you suggesting? That jet skiing is banned? Or banned in certain areas? because thats not going to happen is it.

Rules you impose regarding where jet skiers can and cant go are only going to be ignored anyway. And what rights will this eco-warrior have to stop those who do ignore the rules? Unless the skiers carry some sort of GPS or map (which 99% dont) they wont know if they have drifted into a restricted area which will be the argument if anyone is ever punished for breaking these rules so what are we left with? The tax payers paying some guy to float around the island shaking his fist at tourists and locals who have spent thousands on water sports equipment and want to use it.

“Wildlife Wardens should be employed at public expense to protect the Island!” Can you believe this garbage?

To suggest this phony idea at a time when the Island should be cutting the size of its Government and it’s out of control spending shows how far the rotten tentacles of NWO Agenda21 have spread.

This deceitful UN/EU A21 program is stealthily being introduced via an army of well meaning, but simple green minded sheep with the ultimate aim of eventually controlling our freedom of movement.

Cause a problem, wait for a reaction and then offer a solution – in this case Wildlife Wardens, behind which the hidden agenda can be stealthily introduced at the taxpayer’s expense.

One must always be wary of those who would use an emotive issue to introduce either theirs or someone else’s hidden agenda, which they always attempt behind what appears to be an outward facade of real concern for others or certain issues – a concern that when deeply scratched, would simply be found to not exist!

I am sorry for the people who rent the jet skies and the lucky one who can afford one, but Jets skies are noisy, polluting and potentially dangerous for swimmers.

I don’t see what s wrong in having them located in one or two spots only.

It would be up to me I would limit us of cars and put trams, train… Saving nature is not as important as the fun of some… Typical

Jersey is a pretty island where you can breath fresh air, until you get stock between two 4×4 on your push bike.

We re going to pay UK policemen for a whale convention which could have cover at least 1 or 2 years of wages for one local Wildlife Warden.

Honorary policemen do it for free and I am sure a few people wouldn’t mind cruising all day long on a boat …

Are you going to employ them? or us (the public)?

I think we should worry about keeping the old people warm, getting the “youths” off the streets, Control the spiralling alcohol problems, and generally more important stuff before we worry about exhausting birds.

Plus if we are going to spend money on this front, lets see it spent on the life guards!!

Totally agree with your comments Nick- and more time should have been devoted to discussion on these issue by the Ramsar Management Authority. I’ve read ‘their’ press release, and it certainly does not reflect the views of many of the RMA members who did not have the opportunity to approve the content. Business as usual up at HDF?

Notwithstanding that the marine wildlife must be very grateful be to hunted by spearfishermen, Tony, I would agree that the ‘gutters’ are an inappropiate place for p***ing water craft to p. about.

In fact the damned things are so ‘Essex Man’ that they would be far more likely to impress somewhere like Canvey Island or Shoeburyness.

I find that nothing riles them more than looking the other way when they are desperate to be noticed.

Apart fom their proven versatility as lifesaving aids the infernal machines are a blot on the seascape.

They’ll be asking for regular closures of the Conchière loop on low water Sundays throughout the summer next.
