Fury at Hospital chief’s pay deal
Friday 18th February 2011, 3:00PM GMT.
OUTRAGE has been expressed by Jersey’s business leaders and nurses’ union at the £26,000 a month being paid for the Hospital’s new managing director, Andrew McLaughlin.
They have questioned Health Minister Anne Pryke’s judgment at allowing the salary, which could see Mr McLaughlin costing the taxpayer £624,000 during his two-year contract.
Ray Shead, the president of Jersey’s Chamber of Commerce, said Mr McLaughlin should be on performance-related pay and called for the States to follow the UK’s lead in managing chief executives’ salaries.
And Unite official Nick Corbel, who represents public sector workers, said that there had been universal condemnation from nurses about Mr McLaughlin’s salary at a time when the director and his team were trying to erode nurses’ pay.

KIT 4 CLUBS
Win a share of £10,000
2012 is the year of the London Olympics and to celebrate this great event the Jersey Evening Post, in association with sponsors Ogier is giving all sporting clubs a chance to win a share of £10,000.

There are more people than Pryke who should walk over this farce.
Its coincidental how Ogley is leaving now, all in the hope that us plebs (the general population) divert our vitriol to that and hopefully let this one go.
Never !!

condemnation from the whole island not just nurses

I would be happy to chip in to charter a ferry to take away Teflon Bill, Garbutt, Izatt, Mc Laughlin and all the other imported mandarin wastrels. Any takers ?

No he has NOT saved the Hospital £600,000! That doesn’t even cover the cost of his 2 year contract!!!!!
And what is the REAL cost here?
1 The extra pressure on staff as existing staff are made redundant.
2 Extra days off sick because existing staff are under intolerable pressure.
3 Low levels of staff forcing reduced department service or even closure (eg Oncology)
4 Patients (ie THE TAXPAYER) having to leave the island to endure treatments in the UK along with the resulting travel whilst they are in ill health
…to name but a few.
LETS GET THIS STRAIGHT!! The States are there to co ordinate the running of the Island and to serve the people. The government are there to ensure the greatest good for the greatest number. Big Salaries for the smallest number at the top of the pyramid and reduced services for the greatest number at the bottom!? Our government is failing our island.
Perhaps they will consider that “COST” can not always be addressed in terms of finance. “COST” in terms of social welfare for ALL islanders may have to become the motivation before the economy fails.

Why oh why did they not advertised the job for a temp ‘J’ cat for 5 years?
Would have cost less.
If his contract is worth over £600,000 then according to States rules they should have gone out and found the best value for money!

This island is a joke now. We seem to have become the place of choice for all the money grabbing, smooth talking bureaupratts, who have all been advised that Jersey is the place to go where they throw money at you, if you have the b*lls to demand a high salary.
Then once you’ve stuffed your pockets full of taxpayers money, you take the golden handshake (or brown envelope, shhhh cop hold of that mate)and run like hell.
We need to do something like the people of Egypt and get that load of muppets out who are employing these people.
We have a guy who knows nothing about planning now getting involved in international politics, another who has 10000 + signatures wanting him to go and who goes from from screw up to another and gets away with it, teflon man (ie nothing sticks) and a failed school teacher at the top…..what the heck did we do to deserve that bunch.
Oh, Terry is there any chance of a handout so I can go too (if you have any brown envelopes left that is !!)

we should riot in in the royal square to show the states we are not happy!

Unfortunately this is what you get if you do not allow free market rules to play…
I am a chartered accountant holdin an MBA from a top ten business school in the world in addition to over 8 years managerial experience in some of the top businesses in the world.
Perhaps if they had advertised for the role I could have applied for this job and am sure I would have been comfortable with an annual salary of GBP100K… but you know what even of they did I would not be eligible cause somebody would come up and say.. these jobs should go to a local employee…?
You cant have your cake and eat it!

His salary is far too low because it is only equivalent to the pay of six politicians. He must be worth more than that,

This post was not even advertised, that is against the law. Mrs Garbult, Ogley and Pyrke cannot just appoint anyone, it has to be advertised and applied for to stop ‘ jobs for the boys ‘ prehaps he has already got Ogley’s job? The people of this Island need to wake up before there is a New Labour style note on Ozouf’s desk, ‘sorry, all the money has gone’. These people truely treat Jersey people like fools and laugh all the way to the bank. ‘Nurse’ Pyrke you are a disgrace to your profession, do the honourable thing and stand down now.

Unbelievable. While the rest of us take pay cuts and tax hikes he gets a thousand pounds a day. Surely any of the fools at Cyril Le Marquand house could do the job he’s doing. It beggars belief.

#5 Mark G … come on , you must know that the states don’t apply the same rules to themselves.
Mind you based on the lot in the chambers at the moment, i guess you had the same chance of being employed as if you worked as a store manager in a well known burger chain, since you are management experienced.
(please note this is no disrespect to any mangement in any well known burger chains that may choose to take offence..)

How come at his last job he was paid £110k but comes here on £312k plus he lives in a 4star hotel and jets in on a monday ,flys out on a friday,so therefor only does 4 full days “work”. Anne Pryke hang your head in shame. Why did you not tell “us” before now. Its long overdue, please ,just when is the “freedom of information” law coming in. What a great week for the states.Shadow boards,Brussels office,Ogley off (with pay off ?)hospital farce, Oh God,please come down and help us before we end up like Egypt,Tunisia and now Saudia Arabia

Don’t Blame Andrew Mclaughlin – the fault lies with Anne Pryke – she should do the honorable thing and go – quickly, with a profound apology to the people of Jersey

I’ve ben a GP in Jersey for 14 years, and am horrified at the quality of the “medical executives” over here.
Anne Pryke – may have been a competant nurse, but she simply does not have the skills or ability in her present position. The soon to be retiring “medical officer” is another example of pretty average clinicians who became overpaid and influential “executives” – enough is enough – the UK Prime Minister ears around £142k per year – maybe we should think about capping our executive salary at thay kind of level -

So let me get this right .
We have Philip Ozouf and the likes of Le Sueur stating that he will make savings to the public purse… then embarks the biggest tax hikes in living memory.
He then spends £10 million on a park we don’t need and can not afford. He then sacks front line public staff (nurses) and pays them millions in redundancy payments. He then allows a commission to spend in excess of £700k to look at ways to save money at the hospital then employs the new chief executive non job to look at ways to save money.
This is the most disgusting appointment and waste of public money in living memory. How the states can justify paying someone our money at £26,000 a month and see no return for this money in incredible. Anne Pryke head of health should resign over this appointment with immediate effect.
Our chemo dept is effectively shutting down. We have massive waiting lists for routine operations and staff that simply cannot cope with the work load. And yet they continue to justify these types of appointments. This mans contract should be revoked and more nurses employed on the frontline.
Or Am I missing something here!

I do wonder how this department fixes salaries. When my firm recruits, we ask for details of the applicants current job and salary. If we make an offer, we ususually offer between ten and twenty percent more (for both local and overseas applicants) than their current salary, which is usually enough to motivate them to move. I know that short term contracts attract a premium, but is it crazy paying 3 times his previous salary irrespective of who actually receives the money.
I agree though that Mr McL has nothing to explain or answer to, the fault for this lies with the person who agreed the terms with him.

I am sure that I am not alone when saying that the recent appointment of the hospital’s new managing director Andrew McLaughlin is not only a disgraceful misappropriation of taxpayers money but an insult to the hard working people of Jersey. I fundamentally disagree with this outrages appointment.
In the lead up to the now implemented tax increases Senator Ozouf and Jersey’s Chief Minister made the statement that they were committed to making savings to the public purse and balancing the books, they then embarked on the biggest tax hikes in living memory. To now see this new windfall of taxpayers money spent on senior civil servants pay in excess of £26,000 a month is as unsavoury as it is questionable.
The hospital was one of the only things in Jersey that we could hold our heads up and say that we were proud of it. With the debacle of the swine flue pandemic that never was, and the millions that were spent on vaccine that was never used , the implementation of a new report on ways to save money (over £700k) and this new appointment to the tune of £312.000 a year. No wonder the public have lost all faith in our political system and its politicians. They are simply incapable of doing a decent job whilst squandering millions of public funds.
This is the most questionable of public appointments. How did this happen? Who gave the final word that this contract was acceptable? And who signed it off? These questions need to be answered and the person held to account by the States of Jersey. This appointment once again call’s into question the whole senior civil service pay structure and how this is paid for with taxpayer’s money.
How the states can justify paying someone our money at £26,000 a month and see no return for this expenditure is incredible. There was public outcry when the banks started paying bonuses to staff after the credit crunch. Rightly or wrongly, they however were committed to making a profit for the employer. This appointment has no financial basis with which to do this. No profit for Jersey PLC is being made. The public are paying for this scandal with increased taxes and poor performance from the people its political representatives employ.
Our chemo dept is effectively shutting down. We have massive waiting lists for routine operations and staff that simply cannot cope with the work load. We have seen frontline nurses lose their jobs and yet they continue to justify these senior non jobs. This money should be used to employ nurses on the front line of public service, with the multi layer of management reduced within the hospital infrastructure freeing up funds where they are needed most.
The JEP ran this article and included what the money could have bought instead of it being spent on one man, we could have had another 14 staff nurses on the frontline where they are needed most. This has got to be the logical use of this money. It is such a serious matter that I feel Andrew McLaughlin’s contract should be revoked and Anne Pryke head of health should resign over this debacle with immediate effect. They have both proved that they are incapable of doing their respective jobs and I hope that the states will take a very serious view of this matter with the utmost urgency it deserves.
