Gorillas go green with a new heating system

Saturday 19th February 2011, 2:56PM GMT.

The gorillas will be able to keep warm outside thanks to a number of under-floor ‘hot spots’ which are being created

GORILLAS at the Durrell wildlife park will be reducing their carbon footprint while warming their feet at the same time thanks to £30,000 in sponsorship to heat the inside of their enclosure in a greener way.

An oil-fired burner currently operates the under-floor heating there, but this is due to be changed to a heat pump system.

The project has been funded by £20,000 from the Jersey Electricity Company and £10,000 from ScottishPower Green Energy Trust, an independent charitable trust which supports the development of renewable energy sources in communities around the country to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and combat climate change.

As if Durrell would be interested in their carbon footprint. Is this not the same organisation which advertised for Blue Islands to promote air travel? Additional air travel increases the carbon footprint! So does Durrell’s jet-setting around the world.

Jersey Girl – you took the words right out of my mouth. Do they really think that a bit of PR like this makes up for the scandalous (above fuel price index) increases that both these companies have been charging?
