May opening for Madeira flood victims’ home
Tuesday 22nd February 2011, 2:56PM GMT.
A JERSEY-funded project to build an extension to a retirement home in one of the areas worst hit by last year’s Madeiran floods is due to be completed in May.
More than £100,000 raised by the Jersey Side by Side Appeal for Madeira has been donated to the project, which will provide accommodation for 15 elderly people whose homes were destroyed by the floods last February.
The home is in the centre of Ribeira Brava, a village on the south coast of the Portuguese island, and work is expected to be finished at the end of April or the beginning of May.
The residents, who are currently living in a former hotel in the village, are expected to move in in the second week of June.
