Island tennis star Andy Evans, who escaped injury as the earthquake struck

ISLANDER Andrew Evans was playing tennis in Christchurch on Tuesday when the devastating earthquake struck, splitting the court below his feet.

The official death toll was 98 this morning, and more than 200 people are still missing as New Zealand struggled to come to terms with the damage caused by the 6.3 magnitude quake.

Mr Evans was taking part in a singles match for Great Britain in the over 45s Dubler Cup when the shockwave swept through the area.

Just a heads up, it was not a shock wave, it was an Earth Quake! A devasting one, I live in wellington in New Zealand and this was no shock wave.

I am a friend of Andy’s and I know he was so looking forward not only to the tennis but the thought of actually visiting such a beautiful part of the world. I lived in Auckland for a period of time and travelled back to NZ 3 years ago, finishing off with a week in Christchurch. I was filling Andy in on all the places to visit in the area and telling him of the breathtaking scenery he will experience, just very sorry his trip has been cut short.

From my own point of view this event has actually left a lump in my throat and I send my condolences to all the families that have been affected. As mentioned I was in Christchurch 3 years ago around this time of year and do remember sitting having Starbucks! Coffee sitting right underneath the Cathedral that has now been flattened; there for the grace of god go I.

What makes this event even worse for the people of Christchurch is; although there is slight seismic activity in the area, from what I can gather this City was the last place anyone thought of would be hit with (the Big One) as the Kiwis would say. There has always been the thought of another big earthquake hitting the Country since the last major one in Napier Hawks Bay 80 years ago but all predictions have been pointing towards Wellington taking the first big hit.

In closing, once again my sincere condolences go out to all that have been affected in this very sad event.
