40th Jersey Swimarathon
Friday 11th March 2011, 7:20AM GMT.
THE 40th Jersey Swimarathon got off to a great start, raising £15,000 for charity on its first day.
The Lieutenant-Governor, Lieutenant-General Andrew Ridgway, and his wife Valerie, launched the Lions Club of Jersey event at Les Quennevais Leisure Centre before Hazel Lakeman, one of the people who swam in the first Swimarathon in 1972, cut a 40th birthday cake.
Teams from Beaulieu Convent School and DIPS swimmers were the first to take the plunge before Le Rocquier School later in the day. His Excellency and the Bailiff, Michael Birt, swam in the event yesterday.
