Rising stars face spartan existence

Jersey athletes have achieved a great standard of success over the years, helped by regular competition in the UK.
THE future of Jersey athletics is in jeopardy as a lack of funding could prevent the Island’s talented athletes from competing in the UK.
Despite the tremendous success of athletes such as Commonwealth Games stars Zane Duquemin and Kathryn Rothwell, the Jersey Spartan Athletics Club has descended into a funding crisis.
The withdrawal of the club’s main sponsor at a time when many are battling through a tough economic crisis has made the situation critical.
Facing rising costs at their FB Fields clubhouse, the club has been forced to withdraw its financial subsidies for local athletes travelling to the UK until a new sponsor is found.
